December 10, 200817 yr Does college football need Notre Dame? No. Is college football better with Notre Dame? Absolutely. Notre Dame and Boston College are the only two Catholic schools left in major college football. It's no coincidence that it's the case given those two schools probably have more money than any other Catholic school (Georgetown is the only one I can think of that might be up there with BC but ND is unquestionably at the top). At any rate, in a sport dominated by huge state schools, I love that there are two schools out there challenging it. The funny thing is that BC competes very well nationally, and their standards aren't too much lower than NDs.
December 10, 200817 yr The funny thing is that BC competes very well nationally, and their standards aren't too much lower than NDs. Recently. BC has had down periods as well (and no high periods like ND has had).
December 19, 200817 yr Notre Dame has not been a factor in big time football for the last ten years or so. If they want to be a factor again get in a conference like the big ten. Even though the big ten has not been strong for awhile they are still better than the teams that the Irish play year in and year out.The SEC and Big 12 have proven to be the best over the past few years. As far as I am concerned the Irish have along way to go to be a major player in college football.
December 19, 200817 yr No. College basketball has survived the collapse of St. Johns, the years when UCLA was not relevant, and other things. College football would be better if ND played by the same rules(conference, BCS rules) as everyone else.
December 19, 200817 yr I think that college football is a machine right now....but kid you not, if Notre Dame were to "really" resurface, the interest would be front page all the time...then the fans who hate them would rise up, as well as those that root for them....so in long, YES, college football needs Notre Dame, BUT, it's the Notre Dame of old that is needed, not this lackluster elitest attitude that is prevalent today.

I think College Football is at it's greates level ever. I don't see how ND could make it anymore popular or add any more attention than what it already gets. Ive stated before, it's the haters of ND (including myself ) who needs ND. I love to hate them, but now they are boring. But for college football to need them - Not anymore, they are an afterthought (except to NBC).

December 19, 200817 yr The talking heads say that College Football needs Notre Dame to be successfull. Are you buying it? Let's face it, we spend a lot of time talking about the program. Though I am a Golden Dome hater, I pretty much give them no thought at all. I rarely even notice that they are on, and when they win or lose, I give it not a second thought. But, a successful Notre Dame would have me paying more attention, hoping for a loss, but paying attention none the less. It's just like a rivavalry. It's only a rival when both teams can beat each other anytime the face-up. When one team weakens to the point that they cannot win, then, is it really a rivalry? It looses it's luster. Like ND, if there only wins are against cupcakes, and you know they can't compete against the Big Boys (hardly thought Syracuse was a Big Boy), then who cares??? Notre Dame is one of the most historic overall teams in college sports, and yes college football does need Notre Dame.
December 19, 200817 yr No. College Football does not need any single team, IMO. But, it makes things more interesting when the traditional powers are good. Think about some of the big name programs and how interesting college football would be if all of them were operating at a high level at the same time... Pac-10 - USC, UCLA Big 12 - Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Texas A & M Big Ten - Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan SEC - Florida, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee ACC - Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech Big East - Room for a couple of teams to step up...South Florida, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Cincy, Louisville, etc... Throw Notre Dame in there... Imagine how interesting college football would be if all of those teams were operating at an elite level.

Might get some folks worked up:lol:
December 19, 200817 yr Author Notre Dame is one of the most historic overall teams in college sports, and yes college football does need Notre Dame. Dead On:thumb: They are HISTORY.... T hus, who knows about them, it's sure not the kids that they are trying to recruit. I don't see kids tearing down the fences to go play their, so who needs them, the fans? Likely the only one's who miss them... (besides NBC). The rest of the media is laughing at the stupid money that NBC gave to Notre Dame. It used to be that a Notre Dame game would raw the highest ratings in Television. Now they are competing with the Soap Opera Channel...
December 19, 200817 yr Agree with Alabama Larry that Bama has as much tradition as ND. I am an old school guy but it seems to me ND is way behind top programs in college football. I do not miss ND at all maybe some people do. I think what you do in the last five year period defines your program. Just my opinion could be or could be right . Just think Iam right on this one.

I do not miss ND at all maybe some people do. I think what you do in the last five year period defines your program. Just my opinion could be or could be right . Just think Iam right on this one. My first thought was that I disagreed with you, thinking that 5 years was too short of a period. My thinking was that a program really needs to put two complete 4-year classes through (8 years) to determine where they are at. My example was going to be Miami. That way a coach completely graduates every player from a previous regime. But the more that I have thought about your comments, it's not really about a new coach, but the health of the program. Five years is a pretty decent indicator of telling where a program is. However, back to my point about Miami. They have been lean and not getting the best players in the state in the past few years. Over the last 8 years, they have only had a few years that put them in the top 10. I would certainly think that they are on the cusp of going the way of ND.
