December 3, 200817 yr The talking heads say that College Football needs Notre Dame to be successfull. Are you buying it? Let's face it, we spend a lot of time talking about the program. Though I am a Golden Dome hater, I pretty much give them no thought at all. I rarely even notice that they are on, and when they win or lose, I give it not a second thought. But, a successful Notre Dame would have me paying more attention, hoping for a loss, but paying attention none the less. It's just like a rivavalry. It's only a rival when both teams can beat each other anytime the face-up. When one team weakens to the point that they cannot win, then, is it really a rivalry? It looses it's luster. Like ND, if there only wins are against cupcakes, and you know they can't compete against the Big Boys (hardly thought Syracuse was a Big Boy), then who cares???
December 3, 200817 yr Those talking heads are either ND alum or they work for NBC. Personally, I think college football would be better off without a program as arrogant as Notre Dame. That's just my biased opinion, though. The truth of the matter is that college football would be a lot better off if Notre Dame would join a conference (see: Big 10) and give that conference a 12th team (see: Big 10) and allow that conference to have a conference championship (see: Big 10).
December 3, 200817 yr Im an old timer and I have to admit that I miss them being consistently in the top 10 and competing for a national championship. Rocke, the Gipper, the Four Horsemen, Lou Holtz, Montana, TD Jesus, Paul Hornung and on and on....the epitomize college football!! Just for the record, I always rooted against them!

I do agree that ND being an independent no longer serves anyone except those who rmember the "good ole days". But, the reality is that that ND era is OVER!!!! Big 10, no way. Look for them to go Big E, where it's weaker and gives them the chance to still play the USC's, Michigan St's, etc., and not be so taxing that it would cost them confeence games.

Whew, I was getting worried :ylsuper: I guess my question is still, does Colege Football need ND? In these lean years of ND over the last several years, I have yet to see an interest in college football waiver. Kids do not talk about ND, and I'm pretty confident they have no idea about the mystique of ND. Thus, I don't think that the game has suffered any with ND out of the national contention.

The answer is yes.
December 3, 200817 yr Last time they won a bowl game....1993 Greatest College football team? They aint going anywhere.
December 3, 200817 yr Last time they won a bowl game....1993 Greatest College football team? They aint going anywhere. Who said greatest college football team?
December 3, 200817 yr SI/Sporting news/ESPN...all have done the "Greatest" something and all have voted them #1 college football. It always sticks in our craw. We believe we have done more in the history of the game.
December 4, 200817 yr But the thread was, does college football need ND? Excess coverage? Yes. Needed? Yes.
December 4, 200817 yr Last time they won a bowl game....1993 Greatest College football team? They aint going anywhere. I could have said the same for Alabama in the late 90's and early 2000's and not look at them. Soon Notre Dame will get a very good coach and be back. And yes they are the Greatest College Football team of all time. Thats why they have their own network and even in recent down years, they are still the talk of college football.
December 4, 200817 yr Notre Dame, has a tremendous College Football history and rich in tradition. Without question, College Football needs Notre Dame. They don't have to contend for a National Championship but you mention the history of greatest programs, the Irish need to be included in that discussion. They have hired some Coaches, whom could not sustain the excellence and other programs, improved and prospered.
December 4, 200817 yr 24...No you can't say the same thing about Bama even when we had coaching issues. 1999 played Michigan in the Sugar Bowl lost 35-34 in OT. 10-3 season. 2001 beat Iowa State in the Independence bowl 2004 Mike Shula went 10-2, beat Texas Tech in the Bowl game. 2002 10-2 no bowl probation 2007 beat Colorado 30-24
December 4, 200817 yr College football does NOT need them to excel or even be successful. They have sucked for years and there seems to be as much interest in college football as ever, most especially this year.
