The Apple Bowl (Johnson Central vs. Paintsville) Is No More?

Featured Replies

On Matney's Radio show this week he remarked how Paintsville had notified JC they will not be signing the contract to renew the series between the two cross-town rivals. The Bowl has been played every year for the past 34 years, and for the better part of that span was ne of the most competitive and heated rivalries in the state of Kentucky.

JC has dominated the series in recent years since Matney arrived. Paintsville holds a lead in the all-time series, and the word is that the powers to be at Paintsville has chosen to end the series where it is now so they can preserve that advantage.

Has to be one of the oldest Bowls in the state behind the Rec Bowl of course, never been but have always heard there is a crowd there.

I hate to see traidition rich games halted, but I can see why both teams would benefit from the termination.

I agree, I don't see the advantage of the 1A team (Paintsville) playing a 5A powerhouse (Johnson Central) just for the sake of continuing the "tradition". Both teams will benefit from changing opponents. It could be fun and interesting to see who Paintsville brings in for the Apple Bowl. Maybe Raceland could eventually end up in that spot. I'd love to play down there in that enviroment.

We're not winning so we are going to quit...

Double Header I suppose, with Paintsville in one game and JC in another.

It's the best thing for Johnson Central's program ... a good way to beef up the schedule.

I would like to see Johnson Central play Wheelersburg or West Portsmouth for the Apple Bowl.

Dont count on it. JC wanted a 2 year contract with Wheelersburg when they played them back in 07' but there coach didnt want to play down here.

I agree. JC still has many holes in its schedule to fill. Outside of the district games with Ashland, Montgomery Co., and Woodford Co., the only non-district games that were on the schedule at this time were the game with Belfry and a rivalry in the making with Sheldon Clark. He said there were looking to bring in a big time opponent for the Big Sandy RECC Bowl.

THAT is what I'd like to see happen... :thumb:

I can't imagine why Johnson Central would be interested in playing a double-header like that. If Paintsville doesn't want to play us anymore because they can't beat us, I can't see why we'd be interested in splitting a gate receipt with them when 80-plus percent of the crowd for the game would be our fans. If they're not interested in tradition, I don't see why we should be either, especially when it would involve us just giving away money our program can use.

Knox Central is also on the schedule, I believe, playing them at a bowl game in Clay County. Also Sheldon Clark, Belfry, and then district games with Ashland, Woodford, and Montgomery. Still four holes left at this time.

And Raceland plays Ashland in a traditional game and has done just fine there the last couple of years, right? :p
