Top 10 7th grade teams in the state!

Featured Replies

Moss, Crosby, Johnson Central, LTMS

other 4 in the final 8

Meece, Fleming County, Scott County, Lincoln County

All 8 of these teams are solid top to bottom. Scott and Meece are more star oriented.

What type of defense do these teams run. Up North we generally see mostly man to man. We've seen alot 2-2-1 full court pressing as well.

Walton will definitely need some production from their bigs to advance. They play to their strength and it's certainly their guards. However, they do run more than a zero post offense. Johnson Central has to be the favorite going into the tournament. With a blind draw, there could be some good teams that get knocked out early.

Being a small school, you would think Walton would do everything in their power to develop post players from young ages. Just like all players need to have good guard skills (ball handling, court vision, etc), all players need to develop good post skills (footwork, rebounding, etc.). Walton has always had good guards go through their program, someone needs to start working on their bigs.

We'd need a whole new thread for this topic!!!!

I believe all three middle school teams (6th, 7th and 8th) spend time in every practice on individual moves with guards and post players. I think you'll start to see this payoff over the next few years. But it's certainly a work in progress.

My comments were based on conversations with parents of boys in 6th, 7th and 8th grades along with Walton's history of not having good post players. I think more than working on individual moves (not sure what you mean by that) pad work and teaching post players good footwork are important to see the change happen. Good luck.

Individual moves means exactly that....teaching post players good footwork, how to set the defender up and dealing with contact. You're comment was that someone needed to start working with their bigs. My post was simple that people are working with their bigs. I'm not sure what conversations you've had with parents from those three grades or to what extent they've shared with you what a typical practice is like. It would be tough for them to know, since all practices from 7th grade on up to the high school are closed. I'm sure as long as they continue working hard, changes in the skills of their big people will be noticed.

The draw for the 7th grade state will not be posted until Friday. It will be very important in determining the final 4-8 teams. I think Crosby and LTMS are the class of the field but there are always upsets and there are alot of quality teams this year. Crosby is led by several of the 13/u Legends players while LTMS has several of the players from the old CKY Warriors. AAU basketball does pay off.

So you have Metro Louisville and Metro Lexington top teams it looks like. LTMS had some 6th graders playing up on their 7th last year in the state tourney and although small they were very skilled.

Who out of NKY will be a favorite to advance in 7th grade? Conner? Walton? Gray?

I believe Conner made it to the elite 8 last year. Gray has beaten Conner twice this year. Walton has beaten both teams. Walton has better guards but limited post and Conner/Gray has more skilled post with lesser guard play. It will all depend on what draw each of the 3 teams receives. Stay away from Johnson County/LTMS/Crosby and we might see on of those 3 in the elite 8.

I am familiar with Conner and Walton. Either is good enough to end up in the final 4. Gray should be comparable to both.

Very interesting. I have already noticed that Lincoln Co. and Johnson Co. could possibly meet up in the second round. If Fleming Co. is fortunate enough to win a couple they would probably meet the winner of the possible Lincoln/Johnson game. Yikes. A big if though Fleming has not played a game forever and have only played a couple since x-mas break. Some very good teams and interesting matchups. Should be fun.

Johnson and Lincoln would not meet. Lincoln is in the upper and Johnson is below. Anyone know anything about Glasgow?

Yeah, my bad. I saw the G21 game but that is the loser and Lincoln more than likely would not lose their first game.

You must have left early.;) Meece tied the game and they went into overtime. Lincoln did pull out the victory, but it was a thriller.

Just wondering if anyone has seen both Meece and Mason County play this year.Have seen Mason County play 1 game this year, and Meece sounds like an awesome team.Just wondering what Mason County has to do to keep this game close.
