Greenup County Football Coach

Featured Replies

You're right, we all love our respective teams, but I think we all want the area teams to do well too. I think a lot of the animosity is perceived, more then real.

You are right RAM. My family lives, eats and sleeps Russell but would love for all the area teams to do well and make it to state. This lil piece of the state rarely gets any respect. Would be nice to have Russell, Raceland and Greenup going to state in their own classes at the same time. :fire:

I played football and baseball at GC and at McKell in junior high. You cannot combine one sport and not the others. It will only divide things further. I am not being selfish in this matter, my kids go to Raceland. The problem with combining football is the it will further divide each end of the county. Mark my words. Go back to 2 or 3 high schools and everyone play 1A sports and you'll finally have peace, until then, it will be what it is.

Hey Doc, it hasn't helped us for 35 years now so why not try something new? We have always had decent middle school programs but when they get to the high school something happens. Maybe starting that melting process sooner will work, who knows until we try it. If it dosen't work we go back to the old way, it's not like we are going to close a school and the move would be forever.

You will end up having less kids play. Having two feeder schools should be a huge advantage; more kids getting playing time.

Not necessarily true. Yes you have to teams the way it is but you also have your better 7th grade players playing on the 8th grade team leaving your 7th grade team weak. What if you had enough player to have 2 strong teams.

Ram, I think that this just shows how much pride we take in our community. The talent pool in our county along is amazing, truly, just think if we had one high school.

We get the right coach and he has full support from all involved, because we have had good coaches, at GCHS and we will have 3 strong football programs in the county to be reckoned with in years to come.:thumb:

I spoke to Matt today and he had a couple of things to say:

1) The weight room will not be moved until spring and the new weights are going into the old weight room and this is due to the 4% budget cuts, he has to weigh what the board gives him for teaching allocations in March, then meet with the SODOM Council to decide what positions/programs to cut, but on the bright side he said after those decisions are made that in the spring he is very confident that the weight room will be inside the building and GCHS will have a First Class Weight/Strength Training Facility.

2) He said he has had some folks call him and are very interested in the position, some local coaches, some former coaches and some others outside the area and all of those that have contacted him are "very successful " coaches and he also said to continue to promote the position because he wants a really good pool of applicants to interview and hire GCHS's coach out of what is now a very talented pool of coaches.

This is getting very exciting, Matt, Chris and Mr. Hughes are going to have a tough decision to make but like I have said, the cream always rises to the top.

We did not discuss the field turf, that will be done at a later date because we are going to make sure we have committments from sources for outside funding before we go to the board with the official proposal and make sure our new coach is on board with the idea as well.

Things are looking up!:thumb:

Again, where will the money come from, when the paper said that 4% funding will be cut from the school system, freezing spending, etc.

The 4% cut is on state reimbursed funds--capital/property improvement is from a different fund entirely. The money can and will be found for this project. Greenup is not poor, although they sometimes like to act that way! The School district has a 20 million dollar plus annual budget. They have nearly 4 million in their contingency fund.

In addition to school funding there are additional ways to raise capital funds, a capital campaign, donations, grants, etc. (Perhaps a grant from some environmental group since we will be saving water!)

These improvements are long overdue and should be taken seriously by the BOE and GCHS community. It will be a longterm investment in our football program that will eventually pay for itself.

I'm already tired of basketball, is it time for 2-a-days yet?

This is awesome, when I first got on BGP, there wasnt very many Muskie fans on here.

I agree, coupon, it was quite lonely for us on here last year. I am looking forward to seeing all of the improvements that the BOE wants to make. It is also great to see all of the area fans supporting each other rather than jeering at a program who is having some rough times. Its easy to stand back and laugh when its one of your rivals who is down, but it takes class to say "we hope it will turn around soon." Thanks again, guys.

That would sure put Greenup County, as a whole, on the map!

I want to apologize for leaving the dance team off my list, which also is coached by a non-teacher,but unlike the others they could be doing it for the money.::confused:

Nope, jus like the others. For the love of it! Actually she was a dancer on GCHS dance team herself (I believe). That must be b/c love not for a paycheck IMO.

I love this attitude!:thumb:

I think she was in the early 90's. Between her and Tammy Jo the dance team is 13 time National Champs. They just love what they do. My neice said if dancing was any easier they would call it football.

All coaches reading this thread, we need someone strong, very strong, someone that can make a difference, not only in the football team's results and statistics, but a positive difference in the entire program, the community that surrounds the program, someone that can bring it all together as one, the creed of the muskies needs to resonate, All For One, One For All.

Are you that person? If you feel that you are, please come to GCHS and make a difference!

BOE meeting Monday the 22nd, anyone who is in support of combining the middle school football teams needs to show up and voice their support. This is where we start. People who want change have to be willing to get off the couch and make a change, this is the first of many things we in the community need to do. See you guys there.

I understand the concept about combiniing the middle school programs BUT there are too many kids at GC walking the hallways that should play some type of sports but dont for some reason or another. By combing teams you are limiting even more the talent pool. What about the late bloomer that is a little backwards? You think he will come out if theres a chance he will be cut. How will the kids get back and forth to practice? Where will the kids practice/play? Who is going to Coach these kids? A lot of questions to be answered???????????????
