I wish Greenup well in this endeavor. Frankly, I can't remember this much positive talk with regards to that program in many moons. Okay, that's a lie. I've never heard this much positive talk, especially about the football program. Again, good luck! If the idea is field turf, I suggest someone making the trip over to South Point, they have a terrific new field/field turf. Beautiful.

 

The last time that I really heard positive talk about the GCHS football program from everyone was in the mid to late 70's when Coach Trent was in charge, he did it his way and couldn't care less about what anyone had to say about the way he ran his team.

BTW, they were some kind of tough and put a State 4A Championship Trophy on the shelf at GC under Trent. I remember those teams well.............Dunaway, Salibury and crew were still maybe some of the best football that I have seen in our area. I remember the 75' (I believe that was the year) Raceland team that had a #2 state ranking in Class A early in the season, played GCHS and got ran off the field.

That GC team came out of the huddle, up to the line of scrimmage... They told you what play they were going to run and where it was going. They ran the exact play what they told you and you couldn't stop it.

 

Again, good luck to GCHS in getting a coach that you need to get the program back on the right track.

I was glad that Darrell decided to play at GC instead of Russell. He was a heck of a baseball player, too.

D. Conley was some kind of baseball player/pitcher. I coached against him and I had him on the GC Babe Ruth all star team in 82' (I think that was the year). He was possibly the best pitcher in our league that year.

No dog in the fight at GC but as I said, I remember Conley as well. If we couldn't have gotten him to Raceland then I am certainly glad that he played at GC instead of Russell. His youth baseball was in Danyleton I believe, just a very good athlete.

I was under the impression that the GC administration was going to go after the coach they wanted instead of waiting on a coach to come to them. I guess anyone local has not thrown their hat in the ring, atleast not a coach that GC wants? Someone close to the situation said there were not many applications received to date, could be because football is not over yet. I look for that to posssibly change after this weekend.

I am also glad to see the excitement and support for Greenup County Football. Let's keep the enthusiasim building and we can really make some positive changes!

GCHS is going to go after who they want but they want those folks to know they are serious about going after them, that is why they are doing everything they possibly can do to make sure the coaches that are out there that can make a difference know they are for real about hiring them for the success of this program. It is always better to have a lot of quality applicants in your pool than just one or two, makes it more competitive and the cream always rises to the top.

 

Believe me, We are going after quality coaches and we are getting the word out all over the state and beyond in every way we can through many different resources.

Does this mean and end to the McKell and Wurtland basketball programs, too?

I don't think any other sports are combining, football is due to low numbers. I heard there are only three eight graders next year that play football at Wurtland. I heard in basketball there are few going to transferred from Mckell to Wurtland next year.

Mckell had 20 or so try out for 7 grade basketball this year, while Wurtland had to pull up 6 graders to field a team. For what it is worth if my kids lived close to city of greenup they would be wearing the Orange. Better education at Racland, sports should be secondary consideration IMO.

My wife graduated from Raceland and so it was a no brainer that my step children were going to Raceland and we are totally satisfied with how the teachers, principals, administration and coaches treat all kids.

I am sitting at my desk in my office as I type this with a shadow box behind me filled with my senior jersey, hand towel, varsity sweater and my Courier-Journal All-State squad certificate and a picture of us 3 captains of the 1985 team, Rob Rister, Vallace Rowe and me. On the wall to my right is a shadow box filled with all 4 of my varsity team photos and a senior trophy. Doc, I wouldn't expect anything less from you, I know you care about our community as a whole, just as most of us do, what is good for Raceland, is good for GCHS and what is good for Russell is good for Raceland, it all reciprocates for a prosperous community.

I went to Russell while my wife went to Greenup. I live in Greenup but my son goes to Russell and wife teaches at Russell. We started him there in kindergarden. It wasn't for sports. If my son doesn't ever start or if Russell goes 0-10 he will still remain there. If anything it was for academics and the thought that we would be moving down that way. Wifes mother got sick and we wife wants to stay as close by to her house as she can is the reason we haven't moved yet. I always root for Greenup when Russell isn't playing them. My wife has kin that play football and basketball in the Greenup system and my neice is on the Greenup dance team. I want Greenup to prosper in everything they do and I am sure they will get a good football coach.
