If you were, the only reason to oppose this would be for selfish reasons and not for the kids that are involed as a team. I played football and baseball at GC and at McKell in junior high. You cannot combine one sport and not the others. It will only divide things further. I am not being selfish in this matter, my kids go to Raceland. The problem with combining football is the it will further divide each end of the county. Mark my words. Go back to 2 or 3 high schools and everyone play 1A sports and you'll finally have peace, until then, it will be what it is.

You say that combining will divide? Maybe being divided for so long is what is killing us at the high school level. They will have to play together sooner or later, may as well be sooner imho. I wish that they had one central middle school, but thats not the case. And that your kids go to Raceland further solidifies my point about the fact that you must not live here or have kids in the system. Anyone who goes against this will have some selfish motive, be it not wanting the program as a whole to succeed, or some other reason.

Raceland already gets students from Wurtland because they are one mile from Raceland High School and 15 miles from Greenup County High School. If you make them drive their junior high playes 15 miles to GCHS for practice, they will just choose to drive them 1 mile to practice at Raceland.

 

A Greenup County football coach has told me repeatedly that Greenup County was a 1A football team playing in a 4A district. If you combine the junior high teams, it will be even more true.

 

If I were Greenup County I would go back to the way it was in the 80's, have a football team for each area of the county, and play them intramural. There were something like 6 football teams in the Greenup County School District. EK Raiders (Argillite/Danalton/Oldtown), Greenup (Greenup/Route 2 area), McKell, Wurtland, and Tygart Valley (Lynn/Route 7 area). If you do that, you have more kids playing football, that will eventually want to play for Greenup County High School, and the travel is cut down, they all practice it the area in which they live.

 

For Greenup County to get better, they have to get more players out to play football, to do that they are going to have to have more teams in more locations, not less teams in one location.

It is a bad idea! Not just with logistics, but the county can't get along. Why would combining the football players in 7th grade be any different than it is now? I played when there was only one team, McKell, and there weren't many that made the trip to play up there. As for calling me selfish or having an underlying agenda to be against this idea is flat out wrong. You must not know me or what I stand for to make these accusations against me for having an opinion. I want GC athletics to prosper. I would like to see all area schools do well in academics as well as sports. As I said, mark my words. Combine football and only football and you get what you deserve. Ram, we better get funding for a larger school. We may be moving up in class to 3 or 4A.

I am a Greenup County parent and I am all for this idea, especially if the middle school kids can ride the bus to the high school to practice after school and then buses would run after practice back to the middle schools. (which would help with transportation for the upperclassman also) It is time for a change, and I think this is a great idea! Count me in, and I will be at the Board meeting if this issue is being discussed/proposed!

You will end up having less kids play. Having two feeder schools should be a huge advantage; more kids getting playing time.

Doc, you are a great person and I know for one, you have no selfish intensions at all in this but the betterment of the program but you have to agree that something drastic has got to be done about the situation that is alive and killing GCHS, "which is them vs. us", we need to bring "them and us" together as one, what is GCHS motto, one for all and all for one, well it is time we start living by that creed and I think that this is something worth a try to mend those fences and heal those ol' wounds... Tough times calls for tough measures but handled with velvet gloves...

What bothers me about being accused of being "un-Greenup County" is the fact that I love GC. I graduated from there and as soon as I came back to the area to practice, I donated my time and services to all athletes at GC and have performed 100's if not a 1,000 physicals since 1998. I changed to Raceland as a "sidelinedoc" 3 years ago because my kids are at Raceland and because I was asked by the administration to help since they do not have a trainer or medical assistance for their programs. I have continued to work with both schools and those that know me, know that this is very hard on me. Now, since I attended school for 12 years, 13 if you count Head Start, in the GC system and have been affiliated with it in some manner for the past 10 plus years, I think my opinion holds some merit. You speak as if I don't know the situation at hand. First, I know what is going on and secondly, I played sports in this system and know where the divisiveness is and how it works at GC. It is assumptions like these mentioned above that makes me wonder why I still care.
