and turf maybe a reality sooner rather than later:sssh:

Rec you seem to know alot more info than some of us folks,so is this process of the new weights and fieldhouse going to be used by this years football team or is this a few years deal? If they indeed plan on doing all of these changes this year WHEN are they going to start I would love to see the boys get use of the wonderful changes this football season. But it looks like to me that they would have to start NOW to get all of this accomplished before the season starts. So spill the beans whats the insiders story on all of this? I won't tell LOL.:sssh:

The funds to purchase new weight equipment and improve the field house was approved at a Board meeting in October or November. I can't remember off hand. The equipment has been purchased. You can keep up with some of the inside information by reading the minutes of the BOE meetings. (posted online)

I think combining the two teams could be a good thing, primarily by healing some old wounds as recpark keeps mentioning... however, what is the "plan" for doing this??? It's not as simple as just combining the two teams and running a few buses. What about hiring the coaches?? Normally, the principal hires the coaches, but with two principals involved, who makes the hire??? If the coach is from one end, and more kids start from that end, then the "finger pointing" will start.....again, I think that this COULD be a good thing, but if it's not thought through first, then it could backfire..... I'm hoping that Mr. Hughes will share this "plan" at the BOE meeting....

I know the equipment has been bought, I know they are looking for a place to put all the equipment, I know as soon as they have the spot that they are going to start using all the equipment and I know all of that is in Matt's plate as we speak and I do know he is getting a lot of pressure on getting it done ASAP. As far as all the other changes I think they will and should wait on the new coach so he can be involved in some of the major decisions that will effect his/our program. I really believe we will see some very good changes in GCHS football in the very near future that will last, and I also believe we will be hearing more about a coach after the playoffs are over and I also believe that Randy, Matt and Chris want to get a good coach on board as soon as we all do but they want to make sure they hire the right person for GCHS.

Does Russell have different middle schools?

No Russell has always had one middle school as far back as I can remember. The middle school consists of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. All the kids from middle school were put on 4 or more separate teams in the JFL system and played among themselves. At the time there were so many kids playing. You didn't have soccer and other activities that kids are involved in today. At the end of the year I can even remember the winner of the league actually would play McKell on Russells own high school field just as a bonus game. Some of the old timers from McKell might remember kicking our butts every year also. But that was way back in the 80's. Numbers got low and they made grade teams. Finding schools who played just certain grades was hard at first but finally came around. Having grade teams is nice don't get me wrong, but there will still be animosity among parents in my opinion. Wasn't aware of Wurtland losing their team next year. Maybe it will be like the movie "Remember the Titans" in which they merged 2 good teams and made 1 great team.

This is what I have been saying in earlier posts! Good point, Bigdaddy. I have been saying to wait on the new coach and let him have a say in how this will work. He needs coaches that will work within his system if this is to benefit the kids as they advance to high school. So, it doesn't need to be a question of which principal or both hire a coach, but wait and listen to the new coach and use his input. If all decisions are made quickly and prior to the new coach being in place, then nothing is accomplished. "Haste makes waste."

I played in 2 of those games. An overtime classic my 7th grade year and a good game to end my Junior High days. Yes, it was nice to come up there and win 2 from you! :p I played in 1980 and 1981. Great memories.

Matt Baker told me this morning that he is going to put an ad in the Herald Leader for the coaching position. He also told me that "we have gotten some feelers from folks that are interested" in the coaching position. He did not tell me who, nor would I say if he had, if he asked me not to, so, don't ask me, please.

This tells me one major thing, that he and the admin are very serious about hiring someone that is going to make a difference.

He did also speak about the weightlifting thing for our football program, he said that he would personally go over and make sure they are lifting during 6th and 7th periods, he said Mike has been out some and is voting on all area and other things, etc, but he would personally make sure they were lifting.

He also went over the new volunteer, Mr. Coleman, weightlifting and strength coordinator, things are still being worked out in this area. He and Chris did meet with him and they feel like he does know his stuff when it comes to this area. He does have a few concerns that they are going to iron out for that program.

Sounds like things are going in the right direction folks.. :thumb:

Yes I remember those games...barely. I played on the cowboys and in my last year my head grew and my dad didn't want to buy a helmet for one year so Ivan let me wear a high school helmet. I felt like a dufuss with all my buddies wearing dallas attire and me in my maroon helmet. We might have faired a lil better if we could have gotton a kid off the Redskins nicknamed "CAPTAIN CRUNCH":fight: He was the hardest hitter growing up in our league since Darryl Conley. Not gonna call him out but he knows who he is.;)

I was glad that Darrell decided to play at GC instead of Russell. He was a heck of a baseball player, too.

I remember those days, seems like 100 years ago.

I wish Greenup well in this endeavor. Frankly, I can't remember this much positive talk with regards to that program in many moons. Okay, that's a lie. I've never heard this much positive talk, especially about the football program. Again, good luck! If the idea is field turf, I suggest someone making the trip over to South Point, they have a terrific new field/field turf. Beautiful.

I have two tips.....Run it, and run it hard.

 Sounds good, Play defense, special teams and three yards and a cloud of dust.:thumb:
