You will end up having less kids play. Having two feeder schools should be a huge advantage; more kids getting playing time.

 

I have to agree with SIDELINEDOC and LifeisFB on this one. Russell began doing this a few years ago because of low numbers. We had to do it because the lack of kids playing. Well our numbers are getting a lil stronger and they still have it to where you have a 6th grade team...a seventh grade team and an 8th. Yea Russell kids have a fairly strong team...winning their share amount of games but at what expense. You think it would bring parents closer and some it does, but oh to be that fly on the wall. There are more parents upset with it more than for it. Our 6th,7th,and 8th used to make up 4 or more JLF teams. We never came together till our Fresman year and the high school never suffered because of it.

Greenup already has multiple JFL teams for 2-6 grade. Bringing the schools together for 7th and 8th grade is a good idea. I would take it a step farther and put together an "all star" team at the end of the JFL season to play against Russell, Raceland, etc. I believe this is being proposed to benefit the entire Football program. Having the 7th and 8th grade teams practice at the High School and getting some exposure to the new coach can only benefit the program. Providing transportation to and from middle schools can only help the program. Bringing people together can only benefit the program. If at some time in the future so many players come out that we can field two 7th grade teams or two 8th grade teams they can be a mix of players from both ends of the county. This would be a great problem to have! As I understand it now, Wurtland will not have a team next year because of lack of numbers. So those boys who do want to play won't have team...

I am a Greenup County parent and I am all for this idea, especially if the middle school kids can ride the bus to the high school to practice after school and then buses would run after practice back to the middle schools. (which would help with transportation for the upperclassman also) It is time for a change, and I think this is a great idea! Count me in, and I will be at the Board meeting if this issue is being discussed/proposed!

 

Where is this practice going to take place? Last I checked we have a freshman, JV and Varsity practicing and playing at the high school.

Give it a rest guys, seriously. There is a ton of land at the high school to be used still. There is more than enough room at the practice field to make 2 fields side by side.

And in the future if there was ever a turf field.....the JFL could make the high school practice field into a nice complex while the high school practiced and played on the turf. Another plus to all of this, is that all of the money generated at the high school from the middle schools and JFL, wiould ultimately help all of the programs. You would not be funneling money into 3 or 4 locations, just the one.

What bothers me about being accused of being "un-Greenup County" is the fact that I love GC. I graduated from there and as soon as I came back to the area to practice, I donated my time and services to all athletes at GC and have performed 100's if not a 1,000 physicals since 1998. I changed to Raceland as a "sidelinedoc" 3 years ago because my kids are at Raceland and because I was asked by the administration to help since they do not have a trainer or medical assistance for their programs. I have continued to work with both schools and those that know me, know that this is very hard on me. Now, since I attended school for 12 years, 13 if you count Head Start, in the GC system and have been affiliated with it in some manner for the past 10 plus years, I think my opinion holds some merit. You speak as if I don't know the situation at hand. First, I know what is going on and secondly, I played sports in this system and know where the divisiveness is and how it works at GC. It is assumptions like these mentioned above that makes me wonder why I still care.

Thanks, Recpark. Imo, the thing you and the others see as tool to bring the communities together as one behind the Varsity football team and unnamed coach is a costly mistake. The best era of football at GC will be with a good feeder program from all over the county with several teams from all the elementaries (JFL) funneling into the middle schools and then to the high school. The key to this is finding dedicated lower level coaches that will try to practice, play the same style of football the high school plays.

My first practice, game, and memory of football was at McKell. I learned to play the game there. We moved to Lloyd and Greysbranch had no football, so we bussed to South Shore for practice. Parents were there to pick us up. Now, with all of that, I say this,,,,if it's feasible, I think it's a grand idea. However, I tend to lean towards sidelinedoc's point of view with regards to the many obstacles that face this decision if it's made.

 

Frankly, I don't have a dog in this fight, but will always be connected to that school if for no other reason than I still have many friends that I grew up with on the football field whose kids are there. I wish them nothing but the best in the endeavor of upgrading their football program. I suppose I'm simply skeptical of the outcome and knowing all to well the history of the goings-on in and around the program, I guess I have a skewed slant on the prognosis of success with merging into one team at that level. So, I'll be pleasantly surprised if it does work. Good Luck!:thumb:

Once the coach is hired, if this is something that is what he wants, then go for it. Just remember, the crow is in the freezer.

I don't have a dog in this fight as well. Other than my niece and nephew attending Greenup and both being involved in some type of sport I have no ties to Greenup. Just alot of friends and realitives who have kids in the system. Wife has cousins who play for McKell so I only wish the best for the school and football team. Might have to do some irrigation of the practice field if all that comes about. Doesn't it hold alot of water and stay swampy?

Don't read too much into my previous posts, but I didn't ask you to eat crow, just that anyone with the opinion that putting the schools together would fix things should be prepared to eat crow. And as far as the wait and see approach, re-read it. I said wait until you have a new head coach before you make drastic changes that will affect his team. What is so bad with that? By the way, why are you so up in the air over my opinion anyway? This is supposed to a discussion and you want to turn this into an argument and call me names. I have stated numerous times that it is just my opinion that you will hurt the athletic program as a whole by only combining football. Only time will tell which opinion is right, depending on which way the administration decides to go with their plans.
