Estill Co. 31 Somerset 6

Featured Replies

Estill rolls with over 300 yards rushing, great game both teams, have a safe trip home.

Good win for the Engineers. Next up, Taylor County.

Congrats Engineers.....good game. Engineers did what they do, they ran the ball. SHS did a good job after giving up a quick 16, Somerset settled down and played pretty well the rest of the first half. EC didn't have much luck running in last qtr and a half of the first half as the Jumpers played pretty good D. EC played really good D all night as the Jumpers could not get on track on O all night. SHS had 4 or 5 turnovers that really hurt them keep any momentum going. EC did a nice job of just pecking away with the run all night and busting a couple of big ones. Good luck next week.

By the way thanks for the two big flashing signs that pointed the way to the field, that really was helpful.

Estill must have a nice strong line. Do they have enough skill/speed guys to matchup with the premier 3A teams?

The line is very strong, undoubtedly one of the strongest in 3A.

Prediction: Estill in regional final v. Breathitt/Harlan Co. winner. Either way, it will be a terrific and close final. (No disrespect to Taylor Co. intended)

We're not looking ahead, but just a heads up to all the BGP'ers it's going to be one heck of a game, if your team is out, make the trip to either Jackson or Irvine, either one would be a dandy.

How were the rushing yards broken out (who)

Dont know exactly right now but the Neers had the ball for 40 minutes in this game.

^ Wow- in a 40-minute game, that is complete domination.

Very nice game by Estill County. The Engineers didn't quite beat the Jumpers by 100 like some posters (not Estill posters) had predicted but they definately showed that they were the better team. After a methodical opening drive the fumble by Somerset on their first or second offensive play really made it tough. Congrats to the Engineers and good luck next week against Taylor County. On a side note I noticed one of the Engineer's players went down during their post game celebration, what happened and is he okay?

I think they may have some difficulty against a team with some size and speed up front on defense. From about halfway through the first quarter until late in the third quarter last night Somerset, with their undersized group of underclassmen, was able to keep the Engineers out of the end zone. Their offense is methodical and mistake free but if you make them go on a long drive they can be stopped. What you cannot do against them is give them a short field. Also the key is stopping them on first down. When it's second and 5 or less they're going to get the first down but if you can make it 2nd and 8 on a long field where they have to punt on 4th and 2 or 3 they can be stopped. I think their game with Taylor County next week has the potential to go either way. If Taylor County comes into the game healthy and with better weather I think they can score around 28 on Estil--I'm just not sure if they can hold the Engineers under 40 or not. It will be a very interesting contrast in styles however it plays out.

Like I said in the other post Estills O was not mistake free. They do get stopped but they adjust on the fly well. Last nights conditions were very bad even for Estill. The field was very loose and sloppy. The O-line could not get a grip to punish and drive like they normally do. Smerset has a very good young team.

I thought the field conditions actually hurt Estill more than they did Somerset. The Jumpers were completely selling out to stop the run and in a lot of cases over pursued and left cutback lanes for the Engineers. However, the field got so slick in the rain that it made it almost impossible for their backs to cut back and exploit it. As far as the mistakes I meant that they held onto the ball well given the conditions and committed hardly any penalties. (I still haven't figured out the one holding call that they did receive, it was on the backside of a play and I didn't see a Jumper defender anywhere around to get held--maybe the ref just threw it in the wrong spot) As for missed blocking assignments--there may have been a bunch of mistakes there but they didn't hurt themselves with penalties and fumbles. You've got a very nice team--good luck next week!
