November 12, 200817 yr How bad are things going to get? :scared: http://www.wsaz.com/news/headlines/34281604.html
November 12, 200817 yr That is one of the major topics of discussion here at the railroad, as well. We stand to lose quite a bit of business here. AK is one of our biggest customer's in this area. I really feel for the workers and their families.
November 12, 200817 yr Hopefully this will only be a temporary lay off. According to the story, they plan to bring workers back in mid-January.
November 12, 200817 yr Things get scary when they hit close to home like this does. I know several people who work there and have since they were young. It's all they know.
November 12, 200817 yr The layoffs will have a huge impact in our area as it will affect many other operations that do business with AK such as the railroad, Mansbach Metal & etc. There are many rumors floating around so I hope that this is not the beginning of the end for AK Steel.

It seems like I've heard rumors of the Ashland division shutting down since I was young. A lot of people believe the place is outdated and a death trap.

As I said earlier, the railroad will be affected somewhat. Manbach already has as well. The scrap prices are as low as I have seen them in many years.
November 12, 200817 yr As I said earlier, the railroad will be affected somewhat. Manbach already has as well. The scrap prices are as low as I have seen them in many years. My brother-in-law is the plant manager at Mansbach and says the same thing you stated. They have also laid off employees.
November 12, 200817 yr It seems like I've heard rumors of the Ashland division shutting down since I was young. A lot of people believe the place is outdated and a death trap. I have heard that talk as well. Moving things to Middletown has been the topic of discussion several times over the last few years. We have several BGP members who are employed at AK. I'm sure they can give some valuable insight as to what is taking place. First AOI and now this. It makes for some tough times on our young guys in the area who are just getting out of school and looking for work without having to travel away from home.
November 12, 200817 yr I just moved back to Louisa where I grew up a couple of years ago. I was in Louisville and Lex after college. It worries me what is going to happen in this area. It seems like the area takes big hit after big hit and can't get any new factories etc to come into the area. I really worry what it's going to be like around here when my kids grow up. Lack of jobs means lack of spending. Lack of spending means more business going under. That all leads up to crime etc IMO. The drugs etc are bad enough around here already!
November 12, 200817 yr Author Are these layoffs for the mill only or does it effect the coke plant too? It will effect both plants.
November 12, 200817 yr The lay-offs will affect the coke division, but to date there is only speculation as to how extreme the reduction will be. Insiders have said they would hot idle the coke plant, just like the main plant. This however, is just one person's opinion and I cannot state this as fact. Let us keep all these worker's and their families in our prayers.
