How about this. How about we represent the schools we support as well as the boys represented them in the film? Enough of the crap. The film was great, and we are doing a disservice to both schools, as well as the boys by what's being posted in this thread.

that's exactly why I responded in post #55. Truth be told, Vic was a model student-athlete by the time he left the doors of St. Xavier and his (minor)transgressions along the way were more due to immaturity than anything else. It was pretty neat seeing him briefly in the film embracing Deuce and cheering the Tigers on as usual.

 

Regardless, 2 great programs were represented well in the film and everyone attached to either should be proud to be recognized in this fashion. Different coaching philosophies producing similar success-I see a ton of positives in both based on their records.

Not a fan of Trinity nor of St. X, but I thought the show was pretty sweet. I never realized how huge all of the players and fans take this game every year.

Certainly not, he would just get suspended from Winter sports (which he didn't participate in) or for a few games leading up to the "important" one. You shouldn't throw stones when you live in a glass house. :flame:

17 time you are correct. At Other schools it is all about the win...and all about football. WIN at all cost. certain coaches care only about how many "W's" he gets. As long as it is his way "the team" concept is what Coach stands for. Certain coaches care that the players get wins for him. He does not worry or care about what happens to these young men once they walk out of the doors of certain schools.

 

Also don't ever, ever, ever try to put another coach in the same class as Mike Glaser. it will never add up. I wish the rings you wear dictated the life you will lead.

 

 

And now you are getting personal with me...I have no problem with Mike Glaser or St. X - I have family that went to St. X. The film was great but I can assure you when it comes to football coaching Mike & Bob are not in the same class. 26? seasons at X and 6 state championships vs 8 season and 6 titles. Now if we are talking touchy feely, Mike probably has him, If we are talking role model I woud consider them both in the same class just different styles -

 

Either way I won't be wearing the rings you mentioned above - my son owns those and as far as dictating the life he will lead I can think of worse paths. He learned confidence, and how to wok within a structured environment. He learned how to love his teammates and his coaches and he learned when the whole world believes you can't do something (Beat X twice in the finals after they whipped him ealier in the year) you can do it if you believe in your leader and they guys around you.

 

Trinity is not win at all cost - It is a well balanced education with the values of Christ woven into the fabric of its mission. The fact that Trinity has seemed to you to be win at all cost is probably because we have won so much.

I was not talking about your rings but that I wish people loved football and the values it teaches verses the win at all cost montra. It was not towards you personally, I have gotten past the personal stuff since LSUROCK. Nor are they in the same region always.

Everybody just get over yourselves. It's important. We get it. All this "My Coach is more classy than your potty-mouthed Coach" and "My Coach has as many state titles in fewer years than your 'in touch with his feelings Coach" is goofy. Living in Caketown, I'm the 1st to tell you there are many HHS "fans" who have yet to see a single flag thrown correctly against HHS even in an 81-0 shutout and that define themselves through the actions of teenagers from 7:30 - 9:30 on Friday nights.

 

Putting things in perspective is important. Whoever wins Round 4 of the Playoffs, the sun will still come up the next day for the other team, their parents will still love the players just as much and there will still be joy and tears for both sides as they move through life -- hopefully better prepared for the journey from their experience on the gridiron. In the grand scheme of things, that's what's important.

 

Support your team with all your energy. Save the energy used for cross words at others for a more noble purpose -- volunteer at a soup kitchen.

Some of the posters on this thread do not represent the same spirit that was presented in this piece. Most of you do have your passions and priorities in line as is exemplified in the program. Congrats to both schools for the work they do in molding young men - as do the schools and coaches at many other places around the state.

 

To paraphrase Booker T. Washington: "There are two ways of exerting one's strength. One is tearing down, the other is building up."

 

Seems to me that tearing down is dangerous. Its pretty easy to get caught in the rubble.

My son told me this week that Wes is no longer with the Cards. Considering some of the players that are wearing jerseys for the Red/Black I think they might have let a good one slip away and this comes from an avid Card fan. He was an absolute joy to watch (except for one play at FB:D) play even back in his St. Martha days.

On a side note, my father was great friends with Wes' grandfather growing up and he swore till the day he passed that (Wes') Grandpa Harry LaPaille was every bit the athlete of another West End talent named Paul Hornung.

If that's true about Wes, then that's too bad. I talked with him before the T/X game and it sounded as if things were going well for him. In fact he said the offensive staff wanted to move him to FB, but the defense wouldn't give him up. Pretty encouraging if you ask me!

There is a family that had two sons playing in the 2005 game (one for each team) that might offer some insight regarding this. :sssh::sssh:
