Arnold just needs to start claiming that he was born in the Bronx and then simply refuse every demand to produce his birth certificate.

I agree with Newt on most issues but I am not excited about him running for president. IMO, he comes off as arrogant. Obama's supporters were apparently not turned off by The One's arrogance but I think Republicans would react differently to a pompous candidate - and I like Newt.

 

Newt articulates conservative values as well as any current politician. His only serious misstep was jumping on the "climate change" bandwagon and appearing in an add with Nancy Pelosi.

 

Newt might make a good running mate for somebody but I would prefer seeing a conservative governor at the top of the Republican ticket.

There has also been a worldwide increase in the amount of methane in the atmosphere, which is theoretically 25 times more effective as a greenhouse gas. Yet global temperatures are not soaring as models suggest they should.

 

Gingrich's embrace of the global warming hoax may make him more popular on the cocktail circuit but his appearance with Pelosi did nothing to enhance his presidential chances. If Newt was going to run for president then he would have done it already.

You miss my point. What I meant was that Mr. Gingrich has a few more missteps than acknowledging that climate change is something we should be looking at.

Huckabee proved he could not handle the national stage... Guys in four years is a lot of time there will be a lot of names come to the surface for the GOP... Who thought in 04 Obama would be President in 08?

Given Obama's missteps, IMO there are very few modern politicians who have made enough missteps to torpedo their chances at the presidency. How those missteps are covered by the media will determine whether candidates can overcome their mistakes.

 

Newt is one of the most intelligent politicians alive and he knows it. I believe that is his biggest drawback as a potential candidate. I would love to take an American History class under Newt but I really do not want him lecturing me on global warming. Like all politicians, he is not qualified to lecture anybody on the subject.

I think Newt is probably the smartest politician in the conservative crowd. I would like to see him run for office again, but I really don't see him having a shot at the presidency. Even though I don't believe he is, he comes off as being smug. I think Newt would be an excellent person to run the party with plotting, strategy, and putting the ideas on the agenda.

The republican party must diversify its support base if it is ever going to regain prominence on a national level. Personally speaking, I'm pretty much sick of seeing the "southern evangelical" influence in the party as it tends to turn off a large block of potential supporters throughout the rest of the country. Although I do feel the party is more inclusive than some give it credit for, Republicans still have a reputation for being judgmental and close-minded at times by many. The republican party needs to start concentrating on areas such as the Northeast and the West to spread its message. We get it, OK? The R's have the South well in hand, now go forth and multiply.

:thumb: Well said. The fiscal conservatives and small government Republicans need to reassert themselves. These are principles with broad appeal among Americans in all geographical areas. If Bloomberg follows through with his plan to impose a huge tax hike on residents of New York City, there is no reason that Republicans cannot make inroads into Democratic majorities even in New York.

 

One of McCain's biggest mistakes was not taking on Democrats who have imposed high taxes in states like Michigan and Ohio. Republicans must tie high property tax, sales tax, and state income tax rates to Democratic Party values - even when they run for national office. The message must be that Republicans are in favor of low taxes and the smallest government necessary at all levels of government and time is running out for them to make that case.

I agree. And thus the problem with this election cycle. After the spending habits of the past several years, the Republicans would have had a very difficult time making the case that they are for smaller government, lower taxes perhaps but that's about it. The Republican Party's creed as of late is not so much what THEY are FOR, but rather "what they are against if the Dems are for it". They completely lost their message and therefore their case for winning the election by being relegated to playing defense during this past election.

 

I would love to see a grass-roots movement to bring the Libertarian Party to prominence. If, after 4 years, Obama alienates enough people with some of his stated objectives, and with the Republicans already having alienated many people even in its own party, perhaps a viable 3rd party would finally be a possibility.
