At least I got one of the contest games right. About the only one.

Shelby ran every play out of the power "I" formation, and generated nearly 500 yards of offense - all on the ground. Ran three pass plays - two incompletions (one near interception) and was sacked once...

 

South lost the turnover war, 4-0, and repeatedly gave Shelby short field (on the SO 27 after a long punt return, on the SO 10 after a fumble, and on the SO 36 after an INT return...)

 

Shelby led, 21-0, with 38 seconds left in the first, SO fumbled the ensuing kickoff on their own 10, and Shelby scored with 18 seconds left in the period, going up 28-0 after one. It was anticlimactic from that point on...

 

Shelby's big offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage all night...

I wish someone could tell me what is up with the Dragons? I went to this game thinking it would be a good game even if SO did not win. But they do not tackle anybody. They run their 3 man front with no changes to stop the run. They do not tackle.

 

I was very disapointed. If SO makes good running backs look great. I bet the Cissell kid is licking his lips at the SO defense. He is thinking that he can get 500 yards himself.

Seeing this team in action against JC, it suprises me that they are just getting there first win of the season. But this team has been hampered by injurys. Congrats to Shelby Co. on a convincing win.

Unfortunately, Footballisking is correct...the weight of a winless season, tremendous inexperience, and the first quarter Shelby onslaught all resulted in South struggling to put up a fight the remaining three quarters. I was very impressed by the Shelby effort and (generally) the execution...but I'm not sure how much we really learned about the Rockets. A pretty decent South defense just didn't show in the final three quarters.

 

We'll learn more this week when Oldham County and Shelby play.

I think you learned two things about the Rockets. The teams they have been playing all year are good. When you take a step back in the talent level it shows just how good you can be. One thing about this Rocket team is that they hadn't won a game all year, they have never quit on themselves or have never gone on to the filed thinking that they couldn't beat the team on the other side of the field. Many times when you are in a situation like this, the finger is being pointed at another player or coach. Not this bunch, they have stayed togather as a family.

Honestly, nothing about Shelby really surprised me in this game.

 

No, I'm not claiming clairvoyance; I have just been following the Rockets all season long, game by game. I work a lot with the local radio guys, the coach, and have some good friends on the inside of the program....

 

Unfortunately, strength of schedule doesn't really tell as much as a lot of folks want to believe. Lose to 10 ranked opponents and it may mean you're the #11 team in the state - or it may just mean you aren't an elite team. The truth is typically somewhere in the middle...

 

But Shelby has been competitive with a lot of the teams on their schedule...I have been saying on my Friday radio show all season that this team still has the potential to go deep in the playoffs...and I still believe that.

 

They need the Oldham game more than Oldham County does...that motivation is a big asset to them in front of the Shelby faithful...

Injuries have been a problem, but take a look at the schedule. Seven of the eight losses have been to teams with winning record. And I know Shelby County is 6A, but six losses have come to 6A schools, with the other losses against a 5A and 4A. Basically, there have been no easy nights on the Rocket schedule.

 

6A - North Hardin (3-6), lost 33-30

4A - North Bullitt (5-4), lost 27-14

5A - Johnson Central (9-0), lost 36-29

6A - Scott County (7-2), lost 40-9

6A - DuPont Manual (7-2), lost 35-13

6A - George Rogers Clark (6-3), lost 14-7

6A - Eastern (8-1), lost 48-25

6A - Madison Central (7-2), lost 28-6

 

Still to play: 5A - Oldham County (7-2)

Going right along with how tough the schedule has been for the Rockets.

Schedule has been brutal for the Rockets along with numerous injuries to starters.

The positive for Rockets fans is the fact that they only lose 3 starters and only 7-8 seniors overall.

Should be an exciting season next year for the Rockets. They deserve it after this season.

Shelby County brings back the vast majority of their talent next year and they will be solid. Injuries have really hurt them as well as a very tough schedule. In 2009, Shelby County will be a VERY good team. Mark that down.

After following this team this season, Rocket fans should be VERY excited about next year. Cresap will be back, along with a slew of talented receivers. Only a few seniors graduate. Mad. Central, Scott County, and GRC will need to watch out in what has been one of the perennially toughest 6A districts...
