October 24, 200817 yr Calling Obama a socialist has been the main talking point of the McCain campaign the last few days, calling him a Muslim has not been a McCain push but it has widely been pushed by the republicans on the ground, read BGP for example. Questioning someone's "Americanism" is hateful and it is also the most disgraceful distasteful action that the republicans have partaken in during the last 28 years. What they inappropriately deem "American" are there own values, and call others who disagree "anti-American". Yes false accusations of racism are hateful but I don't see anyone calling McCain a racist. What were his wife's comments about America? What were his preacher for 20 years comments about America? What did his "neighbor" do to America, but later said it wasn't enough that he wished he had done more?
October 24, 200817 yr He's not a socialist. If you want to mend the definition of socialism so that it can include Obama, then you'll also include McCain and the United States. Agreed to an extent. Some policies in America are socialist. Social security being one of the many. His views about what the government should be involved in and McCains's are different though. Problem is McCain is moving in the same direction on some issues. Specifically the fact that he wants the government to buy up bad mortgages.

You limit one side of your argument to what Obama has said and you open the other side to what McCain supporters have said, not McCain. There is plenty of hate coming from both sides for those who have their eyes open. I don't agree that calling someone a socialist is hateful speech. Even if it is not correct.
October 24, 200817 yr Back to the topic. So a policeman who is voting for McCain doesn't believe this, I'll go with him.
October 24, 200817 yr Obama is a socialist. Loook at his economic ideas, then read up on socialism. They are one in the same. If that doesn't bother you, that's fine. But don't get offended or call it "hateful" when the truth is spoken. Any economy that wants to take from the performers and give to the non-performers is a form of socialism. Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society.[1][2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism They are NOT one in the same. Tell me where Obama is advocating collective ownership of the means of production?
October 24, 200817 yr Back to the topic. So a policeman who is voting for McCain doesn't believe this, I'll go with him. What cop are you referring to and where does he say he is voting for McCain. Where does the cop say he doesn't believe her? I thought when the story first came out it was weird that somoene commiting a robbery who already had the money would go through w/ this instead of fleeing.
October 24, 200817 yr Y'all....what this perpertrator did was awful, and this woman did not deserve it. But I think it's a bit of a broad brush approach to paint all Obama supporters, and the campaign as the same. I feel the same way about the people who support McCain who call Obama a terrorist, & who refuse to believe he's Christian. For instance, some of you who post on here don't believe those things. I wouldn't cast you all in the same light.

Yes false accusations of racism are hateful but I don't see anyone calling McCain a racist. Are a lot of BGPers calling Obama a muslim? I know that I never have. So McCain is responsible for everyone who supports him and what they say/do? So that does make Obama responsible for everyone who supports him and what they say/do? So it IS Obama who is to blame for the democrats on the ground who have started websites and blogs which spread lies about John McCain & Sarah Palin. As far as anti-American rhetoric, Obama can thank Biden and Clinton for starting the attacks regarding his associations and voting record. I don't support or agree with everything being said on the campaign trail. However, Obama's own running mate started the patriotism question by stating that Obama's vote against funding the troops would cause 'soldiers to die'. You don't think that was Biden, a democrat, painting Obama as unpatriotic? The bottom line is that everyone is responsible for their own actions. I realize that this is hard for liberals to accept.
October 24, 200817 yr This people are stupid - they act like they are going to get something personal from the elections.
October 24, 200817 yr http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism They are NOT one in the same. Tell me where Obama is advocating collective ownership of the means of production? It is not just about production. You should read the entire explanation. Socialism is not a discrete philosophy of fixed doctrine and program; its branches advocate a degree of social interventionism and economic rationalization, sometimes opposing each other. Personally, I think the bailout that Obama and McCain signed was bordering on Socialism and believe there are better ways to fix our problems than that bill.
October 24, 200817 yr He's not a socialist. If you want to mend the definition of socialism so that it can include Obama, then you'll also include McCain and the United States. Quick question- I have only gotten a few chapters of your book done, but what little I have read, von Hayek speaks about a "new socialism" which does not focus on government ownership of property, but instead wealth redistribution. Am I missing something? Is there a more appropriate term than "socialist"? FWIW, I haven't had time to pick it up in a while, so I could be "misremembering" like Roger Clemens
October 24, 200817 yr Funny sidebar, but 4 years ago my uncle was in a contested election for state representative here locally. He had invested in many of the yard signs to place around the county. Not only are they a time-honored and extremely important campaign tool and symbol of speech, but they are very, very expensive, particularly for low-budget local candidates. Anyway, his signs were being systematically stolen/destroyed around the county, including from my father's front yard. The local sign administrator's response to our complaint (he was from the other party) was "kids, whuddya gonna do?" So, we stayed up one night (my dad and his brothers are all ex-military) near the election and left the property totally dark. At about 2 a.m., sure enough, here comes a car, with lights off, trolling passed dad's property. When they got to dad's a guy leans out the car window and yanks up the sign. My 3 uncles and dad all hopped out from various locations and began firing their federal issue .357's in the air. The car could not turn around and we all surrounded it with our mag-lites shining on them and the color was drained from their faces (they were NOT kids) and they were yammering like hippies who got caught with their stash. We did not prosecute and sign-stealing has never been a problem again. It was priceless. I very much appreciate that story. Where the difference comes, I believe, is firing shots into the air instead of into a person. Very funny story. I wish I was there.
