I'm interested in hearing how everyone in the 8th Region thinks it will stack up this year...I realize this is about as "unofficial" a poll as can be, but would like to request that only those who see the 8th region boys teams "vote" so I can get a feel....(although I would love to see comments from everyone else!! :thumb:)

My "First Blush" to get things going:

 

1 - Anderson County - 8th Player of Year in C.J. Penney(?)

2 - North Oldham

3 - Shelby County

4 - Owen County - I seem to remember the Rebels have a lot of kids returning from a team that nearly upset Shelby in last year's region.

 

Sleeper Team: Oldham County

 

Sleeper Player: Devin Rowan, North Oldham

 

I don't remember who's coming back for Simon Kenton and Gallatin County...what about those guys? What teams may be poised for a breakout year?

I know Trent Maddux for Gallatin County is the real deal. I watched him in last years region win over Anderson Co. and I thought he looked better than C.J. Penny.

It was Gallatin that nearly upset Shelby Co. last year.. but Owen Co. will be a good team this year also.

Actually, Shelby was nearly beaten in all three games last year - and Owen County played them in round 1.

 

The Rockets beat Owen 55-52 in round 1, South Oldham by 9 in the SF, and Gallatin, 49-48, in the final.

 

The Owen score was no fluke; the Rebels were in excellent position throughout to win the game.

 

As for Maddox, he is an excellent player, but in fairness to C.J. Penney, he (and most of the Anderson team, for that matter) was slowed by the flu during the 8th Region tournament. Definitely not up to snuff...

I watched as these teams played twice last year. IMO Maddox outplayed Penny in both games. I think the POY for the 8th will be between these two kids. Good luck to both.

Shelby County should be the favored to win the region. They return a wealth of experience and have the athletes returning that will be a year improved.

 

I have heard that Anderson County will try to utilize Penny at the guard spots or the point. This would be in favor of the other 8th region contenders having Penny away from the basket and trying to run an offense. I don't see this move lasting too long.

I'd put Grant Co. ahead of Owen and Gallatin. Grant only lost one starter and they have good size. Could have a starting line-up ranging from 6'1" to 6'6" across the board. I do think their guard play will be the key. Grant will play hard and physical. They have the potential to win their district and make some noise in the regional.

North Oldham will definitely be in the mix...they have almost everyone back from the team that lost to Gallatin in the SF...

1 - Shelby (I put Shelby number 1 due to the fact they return expierence and was Region Champion from last year)

2 - Anderson (Penny)

3 - Grant (They return all but 1 player, carry good size ranging from 6'1-6'6 across the board, and have a senior dominated team)

4 - Gallatin (Maddox)

5 - North Oldham

6 - Owen (Gamble and Sheldon?)

I thought about putting Grant in there, but I really did not know how many kids they had coming back. I am not certain I would put them ahead of Owen or not especially if they(owen) learn to play together instead of as individuals. This should be a fun season to watch unfold.

Grant Co. beat Owen last year at Grant and had them down at Owen the last game of the season when Kinmon pulled his starters in the 3rd quarter. I think Grant Co could be a sleeper this year. They will be senior dominant with 6 seniors.

Ron Kinmon is one of the fine, unsung coaches in the 8th Region. I enjoy watching him coach his teams...he's a class act in a region with several top-notch coaches. I didn't get to see Grant last year, but from what you guys are saying, I'm looking forward to seeing them this year.

You keep referring to team chemistry and playing together in regards to Owen County. I didn't notice a lack of unity last year. What are you speaking of?
