Unfair coaching?

Featured Replies

You would be surprised what coaches see when kids even seniors play in pickup games in and around school. A good coach knows what kids could help his team out that attend his school, and if they are good enough he will be reaching out to them! These two young men sound like on a lark they decided to try out at the last minute, and he did what I think most coaches would do and that would be to see if they are really serious about wanting to play!

The question was asked but not answered, did the two young men attend the summer camps work outs that the coach had, or did they just decide to show up one day to try out!

I wonder what would have happened had these boys just transferred into the district. They would have tried out just like the rest of the team. I have never heard of a coach singling out players making them try out under totally different circumstances. You just cut them. Coaches have generally a different attitude when football season is over.

That's the thing. You can argue maybe he was running them to see commitment or different things like that. Maybe these players falls seasons consisted of the golf or soccer team and could not attend open gyms or anything like that. You should just put them through the normal work out and if they don't fit the team, cut them like any old tryout, not run them to death.

You seemed to know a lot about it in the first post.

Did they participate in summer workouts?

That is completely wrong. No matter if they were at the VOLUNTARY off season workouts you cannot demand different criteria in tryouts. It is against KHSAA rules.

Why shouldn't they have to prove themselves? They stopped after their freshman year and think they deserve to just be able to walk in and say "hey i'm back for senior year, time to play!" That is not right to the boys who have worked their butts off for the other two years. I don't think they should be chased off, especially if they went to summer workouts and conditioning. But I do think they need to earn their right to play again.

Can you prove it is against the KHSAA rules? Personally, if they didn't come out as 10th and 11th graders, why even waste your time looking at them during try-outs? They are only trying out b/c they are Seniors and want to have purpose during their last year. Cut them and move on.

So what's so unfair? My guess is he wanted to see if;

1) they were in good enough shape

2) to see how badly they wanted to play

Seems to me that if, if they truely wanted to play they would have done as the coach requested. By doing that, they would have shown to him they were serious in wanting to play but by quitting well........

Seems like the coach was trying to prove a point...whether right or wrong. I would suggest that many coaches are not going to take a senior, especially their first year playing, over an underclassmen if everything else is equal.

How good were these 2 as freshman, they may have been very good and their commitment was lacking. In that case the coach may think he could use them but only if they are 100% committed to the team and not themselves. This could be a test for the 2 young men and not just a way to run them off.

It's not the way things are typically done. I'm sure that there is a question to these two players committment, but you can generally find that out once tryouts start.

Is it possible the other players had already completed the required qualifyng run? (My apologies if that was already explained earlier and I missed it)

These kids tried out and made it as freshman. What if their were commitment issues after they made the freshman team. If this is the case do you not think additional testing of their commitment is in order.

Ego is a big reason. Someone should make this coach return his copy of Coach Carter to Blockbuster. Thank goodness a guy like Dikembe Mutombo (who didn't begin playing basketball until he was 18) didn't have a coach like this.

Dikembe would have made his mile time and the 40 time and whatever other physical test the coach put in front of him.... heck - the guy has killed lions with just a spear.

If the kids couldn't make the mile time that the other kids had already completed in pre-season conditioning then there is no issue here... we need Paul Harvey for the rest of the story.
