Unfair coaching?

Featured Replies

I thought it was try-outs?

Sounds like the coach does not have it in him to cut them, so he will just run them off.

Did they participate in summer workouts? If not, it's unfair to the others if there is not some sort of stiff penalty.

Here is the problem. Coaches, in all sports, seem to feel that "last Years players" are entitled to be on the team. They know what they have. If a kid sat out ayear, worked on his game, came back and was not given an opportunity to prove himself against the Coaches Crew, then get out of that school and play somewhere else. If you sat out your eligibility is not in question. That coach is destined for failure.

No different than Seniors feeling entitled to play becasue they are seniors. YOU EARN SPOTS ON A TEAM AND YOU EARN PLAYING TIME. YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED!!!!!!

As Paul Harvey says: Now, for the rest of the story!

It has come to my attention that the coach who has been blasted by some on this thread for his unfairness gave these students more than one opportunity to prove their commitment and one kept coming back and the coach is going to let him try out.

The only unfairness throughout this whole incident was judging the coaches handling of this situation and in IMHO he is far above any reproach by anyone from this or any other high school in the Commonwealth.

Now the question is, will the young man make the team? It will indeed be tough considering he hasn't played HS basketball since his freshmen year, and as Nicknack1056 said IBL and Varsity Basketball are far different animals.

Good luck to him, but if he doesn't make the team, I can only hope he is man enough to not to whine about it!

Why shouldn't they have to prove themselves? They stopped after their freshman year and think they deserve to just be able to walk in and say "hey i'm back for senior year, time to play!" That is not right to the boys who have worked their butts off for the other two years. I don't think they should be chased off, especially if they went to summer workouts and conditioning. But I do think they need to earn their right to play again.

:thumb: I agree with you exactly. I was a player that sat out a year and tried coming back. When I tried to come back my senior year to play I felt like I should run harder, play harder and have to do more work because I missed a whole year of what my teammates went through. I felt like I was behind on my skills, conditioning and just a step slow. All I am saying is that I bet the other teammates that have been there the last 2 years would be upset if one of these kids got to play and they didnt. Maybe this was a way for the coach to see if the other teammates would step up and run with them or say something on there behalf. Maybe he was just seeing if the rest of the team wanted these kids on the team? He could have been trying to build some team chemistry? You never know unless you are there witnessing the whole situation. If the coach is doing this to try and run these kids off and doesnt have any other expanations then I do think it is wrong. I also think that we question what or why coaches do somethings maybe a little bit to much. Maybe we should trust our caoches a little bit sometimes.

Hey OldGuy, haven't you heard that the IBL's all star team is better than the varsity basketball team? :D

Yes so true! Back in my day the IBL all star team would have won that last game against Earlington.......and I know for a fact the all stars would have beaten Warren Central in the semi-finals! :D

That's pretty dramatic...

The reason I had stated this is, that it wasn't two random kids coming out for the team. It was two kids who took time off and decided they'd like to maybe play again this year. The coach obviously did not take them seriously and IMO is pointless to have a tryout with kids only from the year before. If you're just going to run the kids until they quit, what's the point of having a tryout? You want to put the best 5 in your school out on the floor and the coach obviously isn't doing the right thing.

After having read most of the posts in this thread I just thought that I would put my 2 cents worth in. I was never a High School B-Ball Coach but my Son was a High School B-ball and D-1 College player I can tell you that he played Varsity ball his Freshman and Sophmore year, starting his Sophmore year and being one of the Leading scorers, shooting the highest FT % and having the highest FG % as well. He had the misfortune of being bussed to a different school his Junior and Senior year, here is where my point begins. All of the new players from other schools were made to run 100"suicides" 50 laps and 20 sets of bleachers then they had to shoot 100 freethrows none of them knowing that if they did not hit more than 50 of the freethrows all their efforts where pointless. Needless to say my son hit 89 of his 100 FT's exhausted, only 1 of the other 6 new players did so as well. Was this fair no, on top of all of this the returning players all sat and watched this whole thing, was this wrong, maybe. My son went on to start both his Jr and Sr seasons and lead this team as well and graduate to play College ball, I guess if you really want something you just do whatever it takes.:thumb:

By the way did these 2 boys make the team or did they "quit".

Wow, that is a great story. Straight out of Coach Carter or something. LOL

I agree though, if you want it bad enough and you have the talent you have to give 110% and it will show.

What do you mean he is going to let them try-out? Sounds like he has try-outs to see who can come to THE try-outs.

Does he only invite ones to the try-outs that will make the team?

And why is he above reproach?

I'm not sure why he would be above reproach, so I'll let TheOldGuy defend his comments on that one.

But I can speak with certainty that there are plenty of opportunities to be a part of the team before the actual tryouts. These opportunities range from open gyms (which typically take place twice a week) to off-season conditioning (which typically takes place about 3 times a week) to participating in summer games (which vary in frequency).

There are very few valid excuses for not participating in these offseason programs / events go, as far as I'm concerned. They are not "mandatory", though. But for a few kids who didn't participate in any of this and were not on the team beforehand, you'd have to question their motives, dedication & committment.
