When is a player "not eligible" to play

Featured Replies

I have cut this from another thread:

I keep hearing that there are rules about when a player can and can't play "down", but have not seen anything offcial, andy help out there.

Based on this string, it sounds like a Freshman at Ryle is playing Varsity RB. So my question is if he plays Varsity, is there an amount that he has to play before he cannot play at the next level (JV) or in this case, two levels (Frosh) down?

It is dictated during that week? Meaning, what would keep a Frosh from starting on Thursday and then starting on Friday?

I don't of any coaches that would allow a freshman to start on Thursday and also on Friday. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just don't know of any. I don't find it to be in the best interest of the player.

I'm not aware of any KHSAA rules that limit a frosh from playing varsity as well as JV (or frosh for that matter). I think there is a gentlemen's agreement amongst coaches that seniors will not play in jv games, plus I think there is some common sense in thinking that if a frosh is good enough to start varsity and needed on the varsity team, that most coaches wouldn't risk the kid getting hurt in a frosh game. But again, I know of no rule that would prevent such from occuring. Having said that, I don't know every rule out there, for sure.

In Kentucky, there are no limitations as to how many quarters a player can play in a given week so it would be perfectly okay if the coach wanted to do what you gave an example of.

You'll notice that I said if the coach wanted to do so. The only thing that I could see happen, and have in the past, is that Player A is a freshman and is the starting running back for the varsity and the varsity head coach wants to see how the player would do on defense should they need him to play on varsity at any given moment...so the best way for a varsity coach to see how young talent can handle a different position without throwin him into the lion's den durinf varsity games is to play them at the different position during a JV or freshman game.

Personally, I see no harm in it as long as the coaches know when to take out the kid at the right time so as to not have him wore down before the varsity game.

As far as I know, there is no rule, but the general course of action, in my area of the state is: if you start (or get considerable playing time) on varsity you do not play JV. And, no seniors ever play JV. If a freshman does not fall under the above criteria then they can play both JV and Freshman.

This all makes sense. You see it in Baseball every year when there are Frosh who never play a Frosh game until the tournament at the end of the year. That seems to be a slap in the face to the Freshman who have played and fought all season long to find themselves on the bench during the final week of the season. Seems like this would be a similar case if it happens in Basketball and Football.

If he is a starter for you why risk the injury in a meaningless frosh game. There is so much that can happen on Friday nights anyway dont need another game to double your chances.

I know several years ago when Ryan Luster, Rodney Covington, Duran Jefferson, and Austin Hill were all at Holmes as freshmen they started for the freshman and JV teams and saw varsity time as well.

I would imagine Holmes had issues with numbers back then.?.?.?

At the JV level yes, but not at the varsity or freshman level. Both had around 45-50 players.

Is there a definition of Jr Varsity?

My sophomore year I played JV and got a little playing time on Varsity (kick off, kick return, punt team, punt return and a few select offensive and defensive formations that we would use a few times a game).

Late in the season, our starting tackle broke his leg. I started Varsity the last 3 regular season games and 1 playoff game. I continued to start and play JV through this stretch of games.

I can honestly say that I wasn't physically developed enough to play an entire game at the Varsity level at this age. It was more of a necessity that I played Varsity due to the injury rather than my skill level.

A few coaches from other teams made a huge deal about this. Claiming we had a Varsity starter playing JV. Technically, they were right. As I said earlier, I was playing Varsity by default though. I gained much more from playing in the JV games along the lines of confidence and technique.

In my case, which I'm sure doesn't come about often, I feel like myself or our coaching staff was doing nothing wrong.

Unfortunately, the KHSAA drops the ball again. There should be mandate on this situation. The OHSAA has one in place. I'm not familiar with all of the ins and outs. I do know there is a limit to how much a player can play Fri night and then again on Sat. Do the right thing here and put the kids 1st. It is a travesty that a kid could concieveably play 12 quarters of football in a 3 day period.

I agree. When I was in high school I started JV and Freshmen as a Freshman and was the second string FB/LB for varsity games so I'd play the whole game thurs, more than half the game fri and the whole game sat. My soph year I started JV at FB/LB and Varsity at LB so I'd play the whole game of varsity as well as the whole Jv game. Never played JV as a junior.

I can tell you from first hand experience by Sunday I was drained. Playing 8 quarters in two days isn't good especially for a 14 and 15 yr old playing against 16/17/18 yr olds. The KHSAA really does need to mandate this.
