When is a player "not eligible" to play

Featured Replies

How would they mandate it if a team was in a numbers crunch? Not play a JV or Frosh schedule? I think not. If you are a small school or in a numbers crunch, you have no option but to have players do both. JMHO.

So you think this practice is OK?

So you think this practice is OK?

:thumb: Simple but to the point.

Outside of increased chances of injuring a kid, put that thought aside......

What is wrong? It really is a burden for one year. When my son was a Freshman, he played 4 qtrs on Thursday night, 4 Qtrs on Monday night, then he saw time in each Varsity game. SO?

The next year it was Monday Night and Friday night. Several Days rest.

Then his Junior year it went to Friday nights only. However there are some kids that get Varsity time, that ARE NOT READY. They are thrown to the wolves out of necessity more than "winning" a Frosh or JV game.

No need to be concerned with injury? In NKY most game are as follows Frosh: Thur night, Varsity Friday night, JV Sat Morning. If you don't think playing that schedule is an issue then SO be it.

I this situation, Yes. What other option would you suggest?

I'm not aware of any KHSAA rules that limit a frosh from playing varsity as well as JV (or frosh for that matter). I think there is a gentlemen's agreement amongst coaches that seniors will not play in jv games, plus I think there is some common sense in thinking that if a frosh is good enough to start varsity and needed on the varsity team, that most coaches wouldn't risk the kid getting hurt in a frosh game. But again, I know of no rule that would prevent such from occuring. Having said that, I don't know every rule out there, for sure.

I think it is a genteman's agreement.

However I recall my Freshman year (think 70's) when our team was undefeated. An area team brought 10 sophomores to play with their freshmen to upset us. It was thought to be pretty underhanded at the time by our coach and by us but looking back I realize there was no rule in place. (BTW, it was our only loss that season)

Unfortunately, the KHSAA drops the ball again. There should be mandate on this situation. The OHSAA has one in place. I'm not familiar with all of the ins and outs. I do know there is a limit to how much a player can play Fri night and then again on Sat. Do the right thing here and put the kids 1st. It is a travesty that a kid could concieveably play 12 quarters of football in a 3 day period.

The Ohio limit is 6 quarters total according to conversations with Ohioans.

Seniors may play in JV games if agreed to before the game. The KHSAA allows for 20 games to be played other than varsity games and must be played prior to the end of the reugular season. Jefferson Co Public Schools choose to limit themselves to 16 such contests. I do not believe sophomores may play versus eighth graders. In Jeff County, some public schools do use 8th graders and that has to be agreed to by opponents.

I have cut this from another thread:

I keep hearing that there are rules about when a player can and can't play "down", but have not seen anything offcial, andy help out there.

Based on this string, it sounds like a Freshman at Ryle is playing Varsity RB. So my question is if he plays Varsity, is there an amount that he has to play before he cannot play at the next level (JV) or in this case, two levels (Frosh) down?

It is dictated during that week? Meaning, what would keep a Frosh from starting on Thursday and then starting on Friday?

The freshman at Ryle you are speaking about does not play on the Freshman team. He did play some JV in the beginning of the year, but I don't think he plays JV now.

I think it is a situation by situation decision. When I coached several years ago we played two seniors on the JV level early in the year. They were both pretty good athletes that decided to come out for football their senior year. By allowing them to play on the JV level ,it gave them some good game time experience, that benefitted them later in the year, when they had to step in and play on the Varsity level. I think it was the right thing to do for the betterment of our program.

What about a freshman that starts at Safety on Friday nights and is the backup Quarterback. I would think it would be ok for him to play QB in JV games to get reps in.

So IMO there are some cases when it is OK to "play down".

Last year my son was a Freshman and was the starting kicker on the Varsity team and on Thursday night he was the kicker on the freshman team and his backup kicker was the starter on JV it could have been possible for him to have started at all 3 levels but they had no kicker for the freshman team so they used him there and basically he just used it as practice for Friday night.

This being said he was pulled from the freshman team after they ran a fake punt play and he got a helmet to the shin which cracked his shin bone and he was out that Friday night. So we had no kicker basically that night so after that he was strictly a varsity starter as a freshman. The coach would not even consider putting him in a JV game this year even if they had to go for 2 on every TD good lesson learned.

In the state of KY you are not aloud to play contact sports until the 9th grade KHSAA rule. So what teams in Jefferson Co. are using 8th graders? :D

Just kidding! But this is true and if a team is they may want to be notified for the kids sake and the schools.

8th graders can play freshman and JV, but not varsity.

Ram you are correct I should have know that since my son started JV soccer in the 7th grade. My brain must have quit on me.
