I love Elliott County's team but I agree, Holmes had a little too much for them. If Elliott had the 3 ball going it would have been verry interesting though.

Actually Elliott County stayed in the game for more than three quarters. With 3:30 left in the game they had a seven point lead and forced Mason to call a timeout as the roof was coming off Rupp Arena. Don't believe Holmes had a 7 point lead with 3:30 left in their game with Mason on championship night. And by the way, shooting is part of the game and Elliott more times than not knocks them down from all over the court, even against so called superior athletes with their superior defenses.

 

Holmes also had to come back from a 17 point deficit to win earlier in the day against nationally ranked, #1 in the state Lexcath BEFORE they even met Mason Co. :thumb:

 

Im not saying that Elliot would have been blown out by Holmes but it would have taken a red hot night by the shooters of EC to keep it close.

Curious, how many top 20 teams did Holmes and Elliott defeat last year? This is a good indicator of how strong a team was last year?

 

For the record, Arrez was one of my favorite players last season.

I agree. Pittman was the second most productive player in the state tournament last year behind only Miller and R. Johnson was the 4th most productive player behind Miller, Pittman, and Henderson in that order.

 

That's scary to think that they were two of the 4 most productive players on the biggest stage in Kentucky as just sophomores.

 

Also looking at the stats from the state tournament, Holmes underclassmen scored 124 of Holmes 230 points which is 54% of their total production.

v Lexcath: 31 of 57

v Mason Co: 27 of 48

That's the scary thing about Elliott. If they are hitting the three they could beat anyone in the state. They also could suffer a bad loss but still they have a chance agaisnt anyone.

The key though is IF they're hitting from outside. When they go against a bigger, physical team who plays aggressive defense (Holmes, SC, GRC, Manual, J'town) it will be a lot tougher for them.

 

Let's be honest, Elliot is good, but IMO need to knock a top 20 team off before they earn the respect that a team like Holmes has already earned with back to back state semi final appearance and a state championship appearance.

 

Before you even compare Elliot to Holmes they need to accomplish something. Moral victories don't make a team good. I know I'm probably going to get bashed for saying this, but this year as well as last year Holmes and a host of other schools would run Elliot off the floor.

I love Elliot County but doubt that they are going to have the depth to win a state championship. But they sure are fun to watch play.

Holmes lost a top player in Henderson and Elliott has their entire starting five back. From everyone's (except those in Elliott County) perspective Elliott is David and Holmes, Scott County, and GRC are Goliath's. David did sley Goliath despite the odds. The game would be closer than you Goliath's think. Also, Rupp was not the Mason Fieldhouse and there was pressure. Lights were on at Rupp and it was showtime and the Elliott kids showed they belonged with the Goliath's. I am confident they will show it again with everybody back and three kids who have started since their freshman years and played over 100 varsity games if you go back to their 8th grade years.

Do you honestly think Elliot would have even made it to championship night had they had to defeat Lexcath earlier in the day like Holmes did? And had they defeated Lexcath do you honestly think they would have kept it close with Mason? I seriously doubt it. If anything Mason proved they were the far superior team against EC by being able to turn it up that much and outscore Elliot by 11 the last 3 mins to win the game. I'm not trying to down Elliot as they are one of the top teams in the state but they would need a VERY hot night from behind the arc to even be able to stay in the game with Holmes, SC, GRC, Manual, J'town to name a few. Also if we're going to compare scores didn't Elliot lose by 14 to Covcath? A team Holmes beat by an average of 10 points in all 3 meetings.

 

And Holmes did lose Henderson but here's the thing...they are in a process of reloading...not rebuilding. The addition of 6'2 Brandon Housely will offset the loss of Henderson. They also have two top 10 juniors in 6'6 Elijah Pittman and the best junior in ky in 6'5 Ricardo Johnson. Add 6' Riley who came in to the sweet 16 last year with the highest 3 pt fg % in the state combined with 6'5 J. Johnson who could start at pretty much any school in the state. Oh and don't forget they also have 6'6 soph Kevon Arnold who many recruiting services consider a top 20 player in the state for his class as well. Elliot is good but Elliot needs to earn their respect before they start comparing themselves to the David's in the state. Moral victories don't count last time I checked..Knock off a top 20 team then people will start recognizing them and giving them credit where credit is due.

Too bad the '96 team got knocked out by Holy Cross in the regional, they were undefeated in NKY that season.
