After thinking about it and looking at the match ups, SC isn't that much better at every position:

 

1. Riley v Manning/Ford- Riley being a senior and having probably a better outside shot I'd say he's a bit better than those two. He's very smart with the ball and you won't see him make many turnovers, if any. Adv-Holmes

 

2. Housely/D. Johnson v Guyn- Housely and D. Johnson are both great defenders who can jump out of the gym but neither are as big of a scoring threat as Guyn who can take over a game. ADV. Scott Co

 

3. J. Johnson v Jackson- JJ is probably the better defender of the two but Jackson has a better all around game and is more aggressive offensively. ADV-Scott Co

 

4. R. Johnson v Euton- Euton will be too slow to defend Rico and will end up in foul trouble trying to guard him out top. Adv- Holmes

 

5. Pittman v Phares- This is the key match up IMO. Phares is probably better down low but defensively he will struggle to guard Pittman out top and Pittman is probably a better inside/out player. I'd say this is probably the most even match up on the floor.

 

 

There are several games that if at all possible I will watch in the state this year. This is definitly way up there!

Nice effort. It is fun to read and may be 100% accurate. I have even done stuff like this in my head before a basketball game. It always seems to be different when the game is actually played. Tempo, style of play, substitution patterns, foul trouble, and so on are too many factors to look at. You can say Pittman v Phares is the key matchup but in big games like this it could be the 7th man off the bench hitting 3 or 4 big shots and coming up with steals to swing the game.

 

My thought is whoever controls tempo wins this one. Have a question. If Scott County went zone on Holmes, who would be the players to help break it on the perimeter?

I agree. Tempo will be key. Holmes really likes to push the ball as will SC. I'd expect it to be a high scoring game.

 

I doubt very seriously SC would use a zone against Holmes though but you never know considering Holmes probably has the more athletic team. IF SC went to a zone you'd likely see Rico and Riley penetrate and try to find Pittman or J. Johnson on the baseline for a short jumper or back door alley oop. They made a living on that last year, finding the man behind the zone on the baseline for a easy dunk or short jumper.

 

Pittman, Riley, and R. Johnson are all good 3 point shooters though and shoot above 50% from behind the arc so they'd probably try to use an inside out game with Pittman up on the free throw line setting the pick and stepping out for a 3 at the top of the key when someone penetrates.

I think Holmes may be the 2nd best team in the state but I really do not think it will be that close. I am not a fan of Scott County, I hope Holmes wins by 20. I just think you are talking about a different caliber of player, the Scott County kids have played agaist the best in the country. I think a team like Elliott County, if they get hot from the perimiter, has a better chance to beat Scott County. I do think that Holmes would beat Elliott in a great game. Any of the top teams in Louisville will also have a shot at beating Scott.
