Covington Holmes has had some very talented teams over the past several years but they have come up short in their bid to bring NKY a state title. With this year's awesome lineup will this be the year Coach Henley and the Bulldogs bring us home a winner?

They very well could althougth there are a handful of teams (Scott Co., Clark Co., J-town,etc.) that have a legit shot as well.

Holmes is probably one of the most complete teams in the state. While many of the other top teams have one or two stars to put them where they are, Holmes, like SC has many and will have atleast 5 kids this year on the floor with D1 potential. (Housely, Johnson Brothers, Pittman, Arnold) I'd say they have a very legitimate shot to bring nky home the championship this year but as good as the talent is in KY it's really tough to give a definite answer.

 

Do they have the talent? Of course. Will they? Only time will tell.

 

December 14th will give us a lot better idea of where this team stands.

Can Henderson's leadership be replaced. I've posted before, and stand by it, this team needed Henderson's leadership on the floor to keep this team disciplined. Great athletes, great Basketball players, does not necessarily make great Basketball TEAMS.

 

Who do they play early in the season that this team can show what they are made of when they get challenged? Do they travel this year?

As will probably the majority of the state.

 

I don't want to start pronouncing Holmes as a state title favorite until I see how they do against Scott Co. IMO that will give a lot of us a very good measuring stick as to just how good they really are and what they need to work on since it's I believe their 3rd game of the season.

 

I think everyone in the state knows that Holmes has the talent to win the state title but talent alone can't win it for them.

IMO and I was in attendence for it all. Had they not had the harder road last year in the sweet 16 they bring it home last year, but you can argue that al day either way. My answer is yes it is a good possibility this year.

Had Mason not came back against Elliot Co in that first round though, I can almost guarantee we'd be sitting here talking about Holmes repeating.

No disrespect toward Elliot but I doubt very seriously they would have knocked off Holmes last year. Henderson would have locked down Ferguson just as he did Slone and Sanford and Holmes depth combined with their length and athleticism would have been too much for EC to overcome.

 

They (EC) stayed in the game with Mason Co because for three quarters they couldn't miss a shot and Mason couldn't buy one.

With 3:30 left in the game they had a seven point lead and forced Mason to call a timeout as the roof was coming off Rupp Arena. Don't believe Holmes had a 7 point lead with 3:30 left in their game with Mason on championship night. And by the way, shooting is part of the game and Elliott more times than not knocks them down from all over the court, even against so called superior athletes with their superior defenses.

Curious, how many top 20 teams did Holmes and Elliott defeat last year? This is a good indicator of how strong a team was last year?

 

For the record, Arrez was one of my favorite players last season.

To me, the way to determine how good they were is the state tournament and they both looked pretty impressive from my seat!

I love Elliott County's team but I agree, Holmes had a little too much for them. If Elliott had the 3 ball going it would have been verry interesting though.
