Should be a good one, hopefully the boys will be in the flow by then. This early season stuff is rough man. Bulls have some nice quickness and play well as a team. Should be a good matchup.

Noticed a couple kids still shaking off the rust myself. Basketball shape and football shape is 2 different things also!

I just received a phone call from a fellow from the Knott Co. Sportsplex (who have some affiliation with SOAS in Florence. Haven't played there, but hear it's very nice) and he asked if our 14U team would be interested in playing there this weekend, I told him that we weren't able yet, however, I'd put a feeler out here to see if anyone else with a 14U team was interested. If you are, please PM me and I'll give you the information.:thumb:

Are there any hotels in Knott County? Seriously, I followed that place last season and all of the better Eastern Kentucky teams play there.

We are playing in the Bowling Green Middle 8th grade tourney, We play Warren Central's feeder and Russellville's feeder the first 2 games. Both will be very athletic, I can tell you where we stand after this weekend. Our 8th has always been just a little over.500 but the Asher kid definitely makes us better. We just don't know how much. I still say it's hard to win with 2 6th graders playing alot of minutes, agaist a quality opponent.

5TH grade Wolfpack team according to the Sports of all Sorts website has won 61-2 and 58-1? Is this correct? Why would any coach beat another team like this? Are the other teams that bad?

I asked if the other teams are that bad? I still can't believe you hold a team to zero field goals without pressing a large part of the game. Or jumping them at half court like the Wolfpack teams try to do.

Well, not to be argumentative, but AAU basketball is different than middle school basketball. This ain't the YMCA where everyone gets a trophy. I have no idea what happened, but frankly, you can't tell your kids to lay down. I have no idea if the scores are correct, or if they pressed the whole game, but sometimes teams and coaches bite off more than they can chew. Just saying.....

I agree, the Thunderhawks in the SOAS Florence 14U league are a prime example of this. The coach may not have any other alternatives but they are going to struggle against most AAU 14U teams due to their lack of experience in AAU. The NKY Warriors beat them 52-10 or something crazy and they stopped keeping score on the board after 36-4 simply because there was no need to show it.

 

I think if the teams show improvement by mid season to late in the AAU year then it may be worth it but if a team is completely getting bludgeoned each week then I say move to the recreational league and have fun.

I'll tell you what I learned some time ago. I coached a team that was beating the soup out of an opponent at the end of the 1st quarter in a fairly large tournament. We were up 22-2. I went to the coach after the kids went out for the 2nd quarter and I said "Coach, I don't want to embarass your kids, and I'll do my best to keep this in check, is there anything that you want your kids to work on?" I'll never forget what he said. He replied "Coach, I appreciate that, but I told these kids that we'd face this type of thing, and I told them that no matter what, I wanted them to play as hard as they can even if we get beat 100-0, so by all means, you keep right on running your sets, and we'll keep right on playing hard."

That has stuck with me and I'll tell you one thing, those kids played their guts out, we quit running out on them, but we still guarded them hard and boxed them out limiting them to one shot per trip. I can honestly say that I've never had more respect for a coach and bunch of kids than his.

With that said, sometimes when you get in the AAU arena, you should know in advance that you will run into the buzzsaw especially at the beginning. You face the best players, playing together. I agree with not embarassing the opponent, but considering the story I related above, perhaps it's not a coach trying to run up the score all the time. And if the opponent learns, gets better as the season progresses, faces better competition, then I don't know how you could count that as anything but successful.
