Congrats to Coach Woody and WV. They are doing things the right way.

Bearcats had to compete with old fashion day in Walton. People are also learning about being high school football fans. Tradition is just being established and will continue to grow.:banana:

Congrats to Walton, not only a good school, but a growing community. I think they could build a solid program in a few seasons. I like what I read in today's paper, they were very humble after winning, even though they may not have many more chances to feel the thrill of victory.

Waltons student section has not been great in any sport the last several years. Hopefully Friday nights might help change that.

Coach Woody our founder had a nice article in Sundays paper , might be the first time Walton ever made the Sunday paper for sports.

Woody, Walton-V and company showed a ton of class in winning, and seem to have done things the right way--Again, Congrats to them on this milestone victory!!!! :thumb:

I for one am disappointed in the showing by Brossart. I thought that WV would win but was surprised with the ease. I keep hearing the excuse of Brossart "being young", but so is WV. Regardless of BB's past coaching deficiencies, the kids were playing and gaining football experience, ie., hitting and tackling. I saw coaches on the sideline not coaching, poor play calling, and unispired play (especially for a realistic chance to win their first game, and a homecoming game). Perhaps a head coach with more high school experience was needed.

Ouch. A pretty good rip there. Many of BB's players are just learning football. I'm not going to blame the coaches or the players. I just blame the speed at which Brossart is trying to field a varsity team. Not taking away anything from WV though. They obviously put a better product on the field. Its going to take Brossart another 5-6 years to even be competitive.

I think the grim reality is setting in that you just can't declare yourself to have a football program, gather up those who sign up, play a year of JV ball, jump headlong into a varsity football schedule, and expect to be successful. That's not second guessing - it is a learning.

 

While we, perhaps quite arrogantly, assumed that certainly we could compete at anything with the majority of the Division III schools who comprise our varsity football district and expected to succeed by decree, that is not the case. However, we are committed, for better or worse.

 

Much as our soccer program started years ago with players not involved in other varsity sports, so, for the most part, has the Brossart football program been formed. We are learning that football is a whole different animal than most of the other sports in which we excel, and in order to be successful we are going to have to develop football players.

 

Two things are being done to get us caught up in that respect. We are in the process of forming a Junior High football team, and the football players currently on our roster are learning by flying by the seat of their pants. Nineteen of the players on our roster are sophomores or younger, including our quarterback and a couple other key postion players. While Walton is a first year varsity team, they have developed over years of growing into their present status the maturity and experience to play at this level.

 

They say that experience is the best teacher, and our guys are getting experience - two hours a day on the practice field and a game each Friday or Saturday for the next eight weeks. I have every confidence in Coach Matt Reinhart and his staff. I've seen these guys in action, and I guarantee that they are teaching the right stuff, the right way.

 

What happened in the first half of the Walton game (beyond being dominated by the Bearcats) seems to be even for us an aberration. There is no way that these guys should have played that poorly, but they did. The second half was more realistic, but the war was long decided by then. Playing Beechwood this weekend is a disservice to both teams. It certainly won't benefit Beechwood and it can't possibly help us. We will show up do our best and move on.

 

I think that everyone is in agreement. Given time, be it a year, two years, five years or more, Brossart will become a very real force as a football program, just as we have done in all of our other varsity sports. The teams on our schedule who are enjoying success over our Mustangs know deep down inside that it's only a matter of time until they will be looking down the barrel of a potent, competitive, championship caliber football program.
