So I guess CovCath started running out of good players when Brossart took over....doesn't sound right. O yeah because it's not. CovCath has the players to compete with anyone it is the responsibility of the staff to put them in a situation to suceed. That means playing the best players and playing to your team's strengths. That's something I haven't seen since Brossart has taken over. Simon Kenton only gave up 7 points to Dixie, compared to CovCath giving up 47, and Simon Kenton has nowhere near the players CovCath has. You seem like a smart guy Wildcat, what does that say about the coaching?

Congratulations to Cov Cath from a Dixie parent. You all won and that's what counts. I am so proud of the Dixie boys. They are a young team with only a few returning starters and they played their heart out, when no one thought they had a chance. They are working the kinks out and can only get better. Good luck to both teams.

I was not at this game, but I think I can add to the discussion about the return team, when you are expecting an on sides kick.

 

It is a common philosophy, and an acceptable tactic to place good blockers on the front line of a return team, when you are expecting an on side kick. The point is for the front line to run at the kick off team and block them from getting to the ball and allow the second line of the return team to recover the ball.

 

This is not new and I have seen many high school and college teams to this. In all honesty, I think it is probably the best way to handle on side kicks. This way you have less competition for the recovery.

Here's my take on that game. Dixie needs to cover the ball up! It seems like they all carry the ball the same way (much like an option QB would carry it) and as you saw, the ball came out easily. And Cov Cath xecuted their offense nicely, but the defense seemed to lack a "killer instinct". Great game to watch! Very entertaining. Good luck to both teams the rest of the season.

Thanks, Ram. While I have concerns about that philosophy your explanation is appreciated. I'm not sure why it has taken so long for someone to explain it and why we've spent so much time denying that that was the philosophy yesterday by having linemen in.

Let me spell it out for you....the announcers don't like Coach Brossart either; they are out to do whatever it takes to make him look bad.

Mark has done the CovCath Internet Broadcasts for the last four or five years and the only payment he receive are the thank you from the many who listen to the games from around the world (yes from around the world)! Ask Mrs. VanSant about Grandpa VanSant and listening to the games!

 

Yes, Mark had a son on the team last year, and yes he lost the starting QB job to ICE, but Mark has told everybody who will listen, ICE deserved to be the starting QB. Don't believe me, ask around, heck ask ICE! Mark bleeds CovCath Blue and spends countless hours not only broadcasting the Football games, but also the Basketball games and baseball games. BTW he never posts on this site, oops yes he did once! He did ask me to post an apologize to the JC fans two years ago about the Johnsonville comment and it was the start of one of the most fun week of posting in the history of BGP's! Ask even the JC fans about how much fun that week was!

I sure hope the Cov Cath players have more common sense than to read these posts! I am confident they have worked their tails off in preparation of this season. Regardless of what the critics may say about the competencies of the coaching staff, the kids have worked their tails off and deserve better than what is being posted on this site.

All the defensive coaches have multiple years at coaching HS football and 3 played college football.

 

Yes the D-coordinator is strong and yes they are all legit defensive guys.

 

The players are not executing the scheme, which is the same scheme that won the '06 State Championship.

 

This is completely inaccurate. As a player who played under the current defensive coordinator Frueff and former defensive coordinator Hautman, this is not even a fair comparison. Hautman was a far better coach, with a much better game plan-every single week.

Sorry wrong......sounds like the broadcasters have an agenda of their own.... maybe we are on to something here in the CCH community....

 

This is once again an irroneous statement. The CCH faithful are behind the coaching staff. Saying that, this particular group of coaches have consistently underachieved with great talent and mishandled many situation on and off the field.

If so then 5A is weak this year. All I have read is how weak Dixie Heights is this year and they were in this game until the last seconds. I believe Cov. Cath may be a little overrated.

Ram, here's the part I have a problem with. Why have linemen on there? Linemen open up holes and pass protect. That's not what you need on an onsides kick if you assign someone the responsibility of blocking. They just need to run forward and nail someone. Why not use fullbacks, TEs, LBs, safeties? The o-linemen work fine as long as its a relatively hard kick which will go beyond 10 yards. However, why pass up the candy hop onsides kick because you want that guy to avoid the ball and block? A fullback would be able to catch that easy one without having to take a chance by letting it go behind him?

 

I'd argue that you can accomplish what you want to accomplish without having to have your hands team occupied by those who traditionally cannot handle a ball.

Agree with you on the defensive side. On the offense, CovCath has a number of lethal weapons. VanSant is a special athlete anyway.:banana:

Yes ive seen Pat play for the last 3 years, and he is not the top player in Nky. Offensivly hes going to get his td's because Covcath's offense is designed for him too. If you put him against any good team.. (Mooney) than he will be shut down. Defensivly he makes tackles, but hes not someone I would be frightened of if I was on offense. And to name some players that either will be or are better... Guidugli, Collinsworth, Crawford, Kelly, Conner(when he returns).. and I just dont think hes better then any of these guys, but he is probably somewhere in this list.

I understand what you are saying, and again I was not at this game and am only speaking of football philosophy.

 

This technique is very good if you have you linemen, on the front line, run toward the kicking team immediately after the ball is kicked and the second line recover the ball. When the ball arrives at the ten yard line, the linemen should already be gone. There is no need for the linemen to be able to recover the ball, they should not be there.

 

A common misconception is that the receiving team has to wait on the ball, they do not, they can go forward when the ball is kicked.

 

Why would you want LB and TE there? You want blockers, OL are the most skilled at blocking, so give them the assignment.
