A great plan would be to have a hospitality room with exceptional offerings but offered at a discounted price. The approach would be valuable to those who use it and may actually make money for those who run it. My experience of past hospitality rooms is they were very abused by certain school title holders. Just about everyone being mentioned of who should get free are actually paid - maybe not much, but they are being paid. The students, its up to the school they are from. What I don't get is why there never is talk about a VIP/Sponsor room, parking and passes - for those who pay for it, another money making opportunity, perhaps. Not the superitendents who think they should just get one.

I remember well that we had a Supt that never ever went to a season game but demanded passes to the district and regional games and one for each school board member. ( Favors promote favors) Our principal was made sure that they got all those passes to keep in good standing . The principal took two passes and his wife didn't like basketball so he gave it to a close friend. This power thing that supt's have over school principals has always left a bad taste in my mouth. I had two Principals that gave the passes to me and let me distribute them to team members (all boys who played that year , even if they never dressed varsity) all cheerleaders and their sponsor, the assistant coach, the 8th grade coach and one for the principal and one for me, the coach. Never gave one to the supt or the board members because I knew I wasn't going to get fired because nobody wanted my job anyway. I feel I was as fair about giving out passes as you could get.

A lot of schools take advantage of hospitality rooms . I've seen entire teams and their cheerleaders and all their school officials be fed there. I think it's a good idea to do away with them. I also think passes should be limited to ball players , cheerleaders and coaches only. I also think so called coaches cards or passes should be eliminated for all season and tournament games. However, if coaches go to scout or just to enjoy another game these are a great way to say thankyou to some people who might be losing money by coaching. After you figure your hours in and subtract expenses of materials you buy yourself in addition to fuel to scout and buying food for some athletes who might not have the money to, many coaches lose money. At least allow them that one luxury. They way to stop the abuse would be to have a different card for each sport and limit the number that a school can purchase.

I understand the prices for some things will be more than what might be experienced at a high school. Before two games in the quarter finals would cost you $10 per person, because you had one game per session and then had to clear the gym. At least now you can stay and watch 4 games if you like for $2 per game if you don't leave. But who is to say that you would still get food as cheap as in the past with all the increases in fuel. As for the drive i think turn about is fair play when it come to travel within the region.

I think the AD were correct in trying to put together something that was a sure thing for the region. To my knowledge this will be the first time they know what they will get before getting there.

 

I am not talking about people who come to watch all of the games. A larger percentage of the fans are people who are loyal to their teams. They are the one who bring in their little ones to watch their high school heroes. They are not going to stay for a whole tournament. These hard working family people are the ones who will suffer, not us basketball junkies.

I know people who have coaches passes and have never coached in their life. If the AD wants someone to have on , they just fill out a card and they have a pass. I have a lifetime KHSAA pass but never use it. If and when I get down and out, I may have to use it.

Anything to keep it out of Mason County's Arena!!!! I will drive and pay the gas prices to go!!!!

Completely agree. Let's face it, their are very few coaches who have a salry that warrants what they do. It would be ludicrous to eliminate the coaches passes for them.

I have no problem with this. I have many years in the past, prepared all the food for the hospitality room, it is alot of work and can be expensive. Some have gone to cooperate or restaurant sponsors. Either way I am sure there will be some that will not be happy with this move.

 

It's not like it's free food and drink. it has been paid for by the schools. It's a very minimum contribution from each school, with most all of it donated from the local sponsors. Everyone is getting a little uptight about this, but in reality, the cost is nothing significant.

No hospitality rooms? What are some of the 10th region regulars going to do?

 

Pay for food like everyone else does would be my guess. :lol:

Pressrow, I would be willing to bet that the amount you are referring to is never revealed! Just like how those business in Mt. Sterling were going to make up any difference in revenue from last year's tourny and we all know how that turned out.

It would have been a more professional to acknowledge those who actually got it done! Not one mention of the superitendent but someone who had nothing to do with it puts his own name in this "press release" several times. Glad the coattails are long enough to ride on!:lol:

 

The people that run the Bank Of KY Center have been talking about this for a while now. Long before Mustang and the boys put out a press release. That aside, I thought this was for the kids and the opportunity to play in a first class arena, I guess I missed the part on who gets their name in lights. I also must be old school, because the days of just doing things for the kids and not worrying about making sure that someone gets the credit..... well I guess those days are gone. The reward should be in seeing a successful tournament that some can sit back and say to themself "wow that was something great to be a part of".

 

Usually this takes a group effort to get things such as this accomplished.

Another option would be for the regional tournament host to provide a special pass to all the schools in their region to give to the basketball coaching staffs. For example each 9th region school would receive 5 passes for the regional tournament. This would allow the head coach and his staff for every school (not just those participating in the tournament) to attend the game free of charge. A very small consolation for all of the hours they put into coaching high school basketball (for very little pay). This would eliminate the problem of so many people having coaches cards getting in and allow the coaches to see the culmination of the season before heading down to the state tournament.

Yes, but there are certain people who have a history of self and program promotion over their student athletes. No surprise here.

Interesting thoughts from a coach, obviously you have never had a superintendent that was supportive of the programs. In a district the size of ours it is difficult for our super to make every event, but I am sure that he will make everything at least once.
