2. Pikeville

3. Phelps

 

While it can be argued the first 2 have had bright days in the sun athletically, the only common factor of these three schools is their relative small size.

I think it works mostly the other way. Schools who struggle academically and decide to flood their athletic programs with the funds they need and better facilities will create better athletic programs. In return they start building school pride and that leads to even better athletic program which gets more student involved and student athletes have to keep their grades up so they focus more in class and so on and so!

We are talking state wide. If I am not mistaken, Johnson Central has 1 of the top elementary programs in the state. Russell Independent has achieved many honors academiclly, for the most part both of these schools do very well in sports. Of course there are up and down seasons, but both have a winning reputation.

 

I think that a lot has to do with parent, teacher and community involvment. Kids who have support want to succeed and win. That makes a huge difference, even if you have a small school. :thumb:

But lets face it, 10 wins in Northern KY is tougher than in the southeastern part of the state...just nothing to get to excited about compared to football in NKY.

I think we in NKY have a tremendous amount of respect for the teams and people in the mountains. While there are a great number of fine football programs in NKY; I don't believe we have a monopoly on them. Quality high school football can be found in every region of the state.

Just because everyone doesn't get on here and rave about JCHS doesn't mean that everyone hates them. Most talk about teams/players they have seen and / or support.

I attended the JC - St Thomas More game last week and I have to say that the atmosphere was about the best I had ever seen. I sat with a great bunch of fans and had a ball. This is might be a little unusual because I am from Belfry and I loved every minute of it!!! I played on the same Belfry teams with Matney and we are still very good friends, he has done a tremendous job with the team, but he could not have not it without the fanbase and believe me these fans are all sold out for their Eagles. The bunch of guys I was sitting with say it is their year to be beat Belfry (they are something like 0 - 24 against the Pirates) of course those guys were bias.:lol:

 

Belfry will have their hands full from what I seen, JC is big, strong, and will hit you (ask the Canooks). They have a frosh JJ Jude, take notice this kid is going to be very good if he stays healthy.

Me on the other hand, don't dislike JC what so ever. They are a respectful bunch of boys with good coaching. Them boys know what team work is about and sticking by each others side! :dancingpa

You are exactly right Coupon 21. Paintsville Tiger fans are the only people around here and maybe some Ashland fans who speak ill of the JC program. When I played at Greenup, we loved playing them both home and away. Class program with class people.

Neither Paintsville, nor Ashland fans have spoken ill of the Central program anywhere in this thread. But instead of thinking they maybe don't have anything negative to say, the assumption is they do (have negative input) and it's some kind of mystery why they don't post.

The only non-positive thing to say about Central I can come up with can be worded with a question:

 

With all the facilities, funds, and other resources available to the school, why did it take sooo long for Johnson Central to get their football act together ??

 

There's a lot of excellent big-school football everyone could have enjoyed, but never happened. Rather, the biggest goal of Central football for a number of years was beating Paintsville in the Apple Bowl.

 

I'm glad to see that -finally- changing (though you still see -some- crowing by the Central crowd when they win the yearly mismatch ).

I am on record as saying it was the greatest place that I have had the pleasure to attend a high school football games at as a visitor! No one else is even close, not even Cincinnati Elder!

 

The week before the game was the most fun that I have ever had on BGP's and the welcome we CovCath fans received was outstanding! The single biggest comment from the CovCath fans, was about all the Go JC signs up and down the highway with welcome to Johnsonville home of the Eagles. I will never forget the great time I had and the friends I made that week! It totally changed my outlook about Eastern Kentucky and it's residents!

If Bear Paw brings his grill over to JC games and tailgates then I for one will speak even more highly of JC!
