How important is a JV Football game?

Featured Replies

How important is a JV game to different high School programs. I know for one it helped me develope into a better player, But if your from a small school, Is it worth taking a chance getting injured, especially if your looking for varsity playing time.

You cannot play scared and play acting like injuries are going to happen. It is important to develop skills in younger kids that are on the verge of a Friday start.

If you are asking, how important are JV games, the answer is very.

If you are asking, how important are JV wins, not at all.

The importance of JV games is to get player ready for varsity. And that is important.

Well said Ram.

I could forsee JV wins being very important at a larger school with kids who don't get much varsity time. You certainly wouldn't want to coach the game to get kids hurt, but you'd want to stress the importance of doing everything right so that they can win the ballgame.

I understand, and I am not saying to stop playing to win just because it is a JV game, I am saying that the wins are not important for anything but to say you won.

Always play to win.

I would say winning is important. It certainly isn't the most important goal but never underestimate the heart of someone that has been taught to win, and has the confidence going in to the fourth quarter in a close game that they will win.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Personally, I think JV games are very important. I know for a fact that when i played JV it helped me and several other teammates to get ready for Friday night play time. Also JV is incredibly fun as there's not as much stress on winning so you can go out and just have fun while also improving.

Agreed!:thumb: I was just clarifying that you don't want to just roll over during JV games, but rather want to work on getting better at every youthful position while teaching the kids how to win football games.

Case in point, Raceland has a poor record in freshman and JV games but do seem to be able to produce at the varsity level. I know this can't be true every year, but so far so good.;)

If you're a small school like you say and have enough to field a JV team, play them as many games as possible. If can't worry about the injury bug. You can limit the amount of time, a possible varsity player can get, to possibly avoid injuries.

Well said, my friend.

For some kids, JV is all they may get. That may be the only action they may ever see. You know those kids are playing to win. I know that there is no JV championship or anything like that, but maybe there should be. Not a state-wide thing, but maybe in NKY we could do a JV championship similar to the Frosh one. Any thoughts???

You want playing time and plenty of action. Try this scenerio, one team is up by 40 at half time, the 2nd and 3rd groups play the whole second half. Now the same Players are going to play each other within 14 hours the next day in the JV game. Needless to say, your body would get pushed to the limit with all the hits and contact in both games, but you would get more playing time than a upper classman.
