I will tell you how important playing those JV games are. I personally know about three young men that did not start Varsity their freshmen and sophmore years but by working hard and playing every game freshman and JV they had they got stronger and received the attention they needed to start their junior year. These players ended up with all area and all district etc... The more playing time, the harder you work in the weight room, the faster you are on that Varsity team.

 

It really bothers me when I hear high school boys act like it is some kind of demotion to play JV. To me I would want to be seen by my coach as a hard worker and improving then just stand on the sidelines of a Varsity game.

I am not sure I understand this quote. What I was saying is the extra time on the field really helps. Its not about being a star at a JV game. Its about putting in hard work and maybe earning a permanent Varsity spot. Its important to keep those JV games going so that players improve. If a Varsity player is injured, isnt it a better place to be in when you have younger guys playing games in those positions or would it be better just to assume players on the sidelines with no game situations under their belt can go in.

I think this is a function of the Head Coach and Assistant Coaches. If they see it as a place to improve and learn the players will also.

I don't quite understand this either. Juniors who are playing JV, play because they are not ready to play Varsity. Cut and dry, that should be the primary reason. Sometimes they are involved in 10 to 20 plays on Friday night, does that mean they can't play on Saturday. Ridiculous. As a coach you are trying to develop athletes so they can contribute and compete on Friday night. If they are not ready to do so competitively, guess what, double header baby. :ylsuper:

Seniors are not allowed to play. I see nothing wrong with Juniors playing though, 9th - 11th is fair game IMO to play in JV games.

Well for us, it is very prepared to get our sophomore and junior non-starters ready for the big show. It seems to work well, other programs have differing views as to JV, and it hasn't worked as well for them.

JV is very important. It develops players, it helps the younger coaches that usually get their opportunity to try things and show what they can do, also. Winning is as important to the kid that is playing JV ball as the kid that is starting on friday nights. When you suit up, you want to win. JV is not about winning or losing, for the most part, but I think it matters to the kids once the games start. (I have seen more than one veteran varsity head man get caught up in JV games.) JV has it's function, and I really enjoy monday nights with the JV teams. It's a more relaxed atmosphere, usually, and a great teaching situation. The younger guys get tested by actual game experience as opposed to practice only (if JV was not there.). Long winded, but yes, JV is needed and yes ,it matters if you win (if you are a player and care.). As far as injuries, they are just a part of the beast that is High School football.

Sometimes I have seen seniors in JV games if they are 1 year players. Nothing wrong with that. Some small schools have to play upperclassmen to put a JV team on the field.

I think JV games are very important. A schedule of 5 games does not help the program. I can understand not scheduling a JV game after a long road trip the night before. However, an 8 or 9 game JV schedule is a necessity. JV games are for players that don't get many reps in the varsity game. The varsity subs look forward to JV games because this is their chance to show the coaches what they have. It is very frustrating to the sophomores and the juniors that do not get to play much in the Varsity games. By having JV games, they feel more a part of the team and are able to develop their skills. Besides that, some kids are pushed into playing positions that they normally don't play. And this can be a good thing. I want our kids to stay interested in the game of football. Also, I believe that the JV schedule does not have to follow that of the varsity. With that being the case and our team having a turf field, there are many teams that would come to play you. Gate receipts, concessions, home field, varsity coaches being able to watch. This is just my opinion!!

I'm going to have to disagree, though I know the point you and Ram are making, and I agree with the "big picture" of developing JV players.

 

But, somewhere in that picture the concept of winning has to be instilled at the freshman and JV levels. If not, the varsity coach(es) are getting a lot of kids that have been beaten down by losing games. That's tough to overcome.

 

And one point no one has mentioned, is winning attracts kids and keeps kids coming back. If you have 25 sophs playing JV and they are learning, but keep getting their heads handed to them in JV games, I can promise you will not have 25 juniors come back.

 

Flip side, if you have 25 sophs playing JV and they are learning, but win more than they lose as well, that number will go up the next year.
