9th Region sophomores

Jake Thelen from Cov Cath is a nice player and I would not be surprised at all to see him in the varsity games.

Has the size and talent to fill Maile's shoes down the stretch and has a chance to be a big time player in the region in years to come

I agree. Jake will get an opportunity to see some good varsity minutes. He needs to get better on the defensive end. Very good around the basket with a nice touch from the perimeter. Has never seen as shot that he doesn't like!!

Is the Thelen boy related to PJ Thelan?

Yes. PJ is his uncle.

Jake looks to be about 6'3 now and getting leaner. With Luke not playing and there not being a true post player, I'd look for Jake to get some minutes. It may not be in game 1 but it will likely increase as the season goes on. You could also see some time for Alex Connolly at some point. Very athletic 6'3 leaper. If he can work on his handle, he will be a tough matchup. He and Jake, though, are not the same type of players.

Joey Allen for Holy Cross

I would think that with this HC team that both Allen and Broering could pick up some minutes here and there.

I think he had a brother who just graduated from Ludlow. Matt has been in the Dixie system the whole time.

He attended Ludlow schools before moving on to the Kenton County school system.

Thelan was not even the third best big man in the sophomore group in the 9th. Trevan Brown of Boone County, Bobby Stauffer of Ryle and Joey Allen of Holy Cross were all better than Thelan. I would even put some power forwards in the sophomore group ahead of Thelan as well. He is a nice player, but he does not have the skills and size to replace Maile that is just a bad comparison.

Oh, I new that name sounded familiar in the small schools.

I saw a lot of Jake in the 8th grade and he wasn't as impressive as he was in the past offseason. I actually saw him play against some very good competition and he held his own very well. Look for Jake to have a nice season. I see him playing both JV and Varsity.

Joey Allen is a big man? I thought he was the shooting guard. He must have really grown since I saw him last

Joey Allen is a 6', maybe 6'1" shooting guard from Holy Cross. I don't remember Holy Cross having any big men in that class comparable to the other players mentioned. However, Noah Knochelman played with the varsity this summer at times and at 6'3" or 6'4" could give HC some size down the road.

Thats what I thought, I didn't even think he was 6 feet. I just wanted confirmation as frmwaydwntwn1212 listed him as the third best big man in the class. Thanks

Thelen was one of the best players if not the best. I see him playing all varsity this year

Did you attend any of the Freshmen Tournament games last season? If so, there would be no doubt who the best big man was as a freshman. The upcoming year will depend on how these kids improve to play at the upper level. But, if you're going off of last years performance, it was obvious who the best Big Man was. Thelen is a great player though.

Is Matt Trammel the son of Steve or Scott? I remember Scott was an unbelievable point guard in his high school years at Ludlow.
