You simply don't see many kids with the kind of burst Williams has when he hits the edge. Then when Highlands tried to adjust Durham would pound the ball up the gut. 245 for Williams and 150 for Durham...

Last 2 TDs were our 1s against their 2s.

1s or 2s. Doesnt really matter imo. Birds hung with the best in the country tonight and earned some respect from the best, one can be sure of that.

Not a big fan of what ifs and what could of beens when you are playing this caliber of a HS football team, Colerain did what great teams do and that is make a team think they are within striking range. Our guys played their hearts out for their school tonight and made Ft. Thomas proud. Watching the matchups over the years with the Ohioians, this by far is the best I have ever seen. What a machine Colerain is this year. Absolute studs on both sides of the ball. If Colerain takes better care of the ball then they wont be beat this year. WOW!

Dale and Men, mission accomplished tonight. Maybe not a win, but I saw what I was looking for this evening that I thought we lacked against Ryle. Some serious Senior leadership from Tony and Dempsey. This one is behind you and if the Birds play with this type of intensity the rest of the way, then lookout KY. GO BIRDS. :thumb:

I disagree, most of Colerain's 1's were not in the game during HHS last two scores but that doesn't matter.

 

Again, HHS "D" actually played good enough to possibly win but the offense couldn't score. They could have easily been up at half 21-7 or 17-7 depending on what they would have done right before half if the first down were made.

 

I question some of the play calling tonight but what do I know!:thumb: They will be alright on the right side of the river.

It was at worst 50/50 on 1/2s in the game for Colerain when HHS scored late. They had numerous starters still out there...

It did sound like a moral victory proclamation.

Game Stats

 

The two Highlands scores late were against Colerain's 1st team defense. Somewhere in the fourth quarter, oh, I don't know, let's say around the 7:37 mark, the defense decided they didn't want to play anymore. Needless to say, it is going to be a very, very hard week of practice for this defense.

 

Just a few thoughts then I'm off to bed:

• Tony G is a stud! That man accounted for 274 of the teams 317 yards of offense. That is ridiculous. He had success all night on the QB draw and had as many runs of 10+ yards against the Cardinals as any player in recent memory. He is much bigger than I envisioned but that doesn't seem to hamper his speed.
  
• Collinsworth is pesty. But I'll tell you what, he was the only kid fast enough to slow Tyler Williams down. He had the angles but you still have to make the plays on D and he did. WOW! Wasn't really a force on offense but he will be. Seemed like his name was getting called all the time.
  
• Colerain had 4 turnovers...par for the course. I told you they'd happen. That's 9 turnovers in 3 games.
  
• Colerain's defense absolutely owned the 'Birds after that 4th and 1 stop all the way until just after Colerain went up 33-6. It was the defense that I have seen the past two weeks and Highlands was powerless against it. However, when given the opportunity late in the game, the Bluebirds did not give up and rattled off TWO TD scoring drives.
  
• That Clifton dude didn't get much yardage tonight but he sure worked his tail off.
  
• Colin Lozier (#27 on Def for Colerain) is a man amongst boys. Carries a 3.8 GPA and is clearly the best defender we have.
  

As expected, it was a good game. Highlands may be young but they are very talented and should do well this year. If there is a 5A team in KY that can match their speed and grit, I'd like to see them. However, it was very evident when the game changed.

 

At about the 5:30 mark of the 3rd quarter, our FB, So. Trayion Durham (21 att, 184 yds, 2 TD) started turning those 2 and 3 yard gains from earlier in the game to 5,6, & 7 yard gains. Once that started happening, we started going to the pitch and speed option much more, stringing out the defense of Highlands and making them run sideline to sideline the rest of the night. The results are palpable.

 

The Highlands defense was clearly tired. You simply cannot have that many players going both ways against a team that doesn't do that at all. I've never understood that line of thinking and I completely disagree with it.

 

I predicted a score of 24-14. I was close. I did not think Colerain would score 5 TD's but they wore down Highlands and ended up with over 500 yards rushing on the night. I can't imagine that Highlands will see a rushing attack like that again this year.

Agreed. Williams would have been well over 300 yards if Collinsworth didn't make a few big plays...
