Bennett is on CNN's payroll. I saw the report live and agree with Bennett. The report was an effort to smear Palin using her 17-year old daughter's pregnancy. Youtube does not have the full video, so you can accept my account - or not. It was a low blow.

Again, my question was how it was reported. Was it labeled a rumor or even an unsubstantiated rumor?

 

Given Bill Bennett's political leanings and history of bashing the media, I don't know if I will simply accept his version of it. I would rather see it myself.

Anybody can be a journalist if they can get a job in the field. Matthews is a political hack who went from being a political advisor to the Speaker of the House to a "journalist" for what is perhaps the most liberal major newspaper in the country. I suspect that there is a reason that Matthews does not list his college major in his biography.

I don't care if Matthews majored in Asian art history ... the man was the Washington bureau chief for one of this country's major newspapers for 15 years. His journalistic credentials are solid, regardless of whether or not you like him or agree with his views.

I am guessing that you do not watch Fox News much.

Good point. Do you think that most of the 90-95% of African Americans who will end up voting for Obama are doing so based on issues or do you think other "non issues related" factors come in to play in some circumstances?

As for watching CNN, my criticism of the left wing media is not based on the opinions of party operatives. I am a political news junkie and draw on many sources, including CNN. (I was once an avid MSNBC watcher but MSNBC has become the Obama network an I generally avoid watching the network entirely.)

Many people are employed as journalists who are nothing more than political hacks and gossip mongers, which has contributed to the steady loss of readership at some of the nation's once great newspapers. It is also the reason that MSNBC cannot compete successfully with the Fox News Channel.

As a voting block they vote Dems anyway, correct? So, the real question is for those that would not normally vote Dems but now will or are considering voting for Obama.

 

I've heard some of those folks say that yes they will vote for him because of his race. I haven't walked in their shoes but at some level I get that response and have no problem with it. It may be a case of "will I ever get this chance again in my lifetime?"

 

Overall, I think most people vote on non-policy specifics.

I haven't checked in a while but I'm pretty sure that while still trailing Fox MSNBC's ratings are actually going up. They will never match Fox because the profile of the political junkie is that of leaning to the right. They're going to try to carve out their niche.

So now you're comparing Chris Matthews to Jayson Blair ... the ultimate grasp for the proverbial straw.

 

When you find that Matthews was fired for plagiarism and/or lying in his reporting, then you will have a sliver of an argument.

I will leave it to others to decide for themselves whether investigating the personal lives of underaged children of a presidential candidate in response to partisan smears on a far leftwing website are appropriate for the legitimate media. I think most fair-minded people will agree that it is inappropriate.

 

BTW, I heard an Obama staffer question Palin's mothering skills this morning. Let's see if Obama follows through on his promise to fire people on his staff for dragging Palin's children into the fray. My guesss is that he might because it would take more courage to criticize the Daily Kos than to can a staffer.

I didn't say that it was appropriate. I did say that CNN reported the rumor as being unfounded, which is accurate. We do want accuracy from our media sources, don't we?

 

I don't like everything the media does, either. But if their tactics turn off enough viewers and attract enough criticism and scrutiny, they will make the appropriate changes.
