Some of it could be cold sounding, and I'm sorry, but sometimes it's just the way it is. Just an observation about big teams and small teams and a gap. These Blow Out Game Predictions got me thinking about it. (Not just Lynn Camp, just teams in general because of the postings.)

 

If you get a new team that some other teams have a beef with over their situation (which I realize they have no control over) that will not play them or back out of playing them, and then they go out and start drilling (not saying it's going to happen Friday) teams because they can, it is not going to get the other teams around the area to line up and play them, is it? (Also, getting embarassed does not always leave kids with the positive mind set you alluded to. Sometimes thinking you can hang with someone and then get ripped 78-3 does not always boost morale.)

 

We (Lynn Camp) have a loaded schedule most years, so keeping another one on a school our size may not be the wisest thing to do. Really do not think LC played this one because they thought they were strong this year and had a chance to win. We lost a lot of talent last year and are still fitting pieces together, too.

 

It is good to play teams that make you stronger, but sometimes teams will just be packing too much year in and year out for many positives to come out of it, which is what I think will hurt HC with mountain teams. If the talent level and numbers stick, it will be too much for many teams with 30 man rosters or less. (I don't see many mountain teams running out and trying to sign St. X or Trinity to multi-year contracts.)

 

Also,

I am fairly certain that LC got a 1 year deal with HC because of redistricting next year and HC really needing games. Mitchell and Larkey are also a large part of this game getting scheduled. Cold or not, just expressing thoughts on what I think could happen as HC becomes successful. No insult or disrespect here, either. Actually, just the opposite. If I am right in what I say, it just means HC has had the success that they want and the teams not wanting to play is just an unfortunate by-product of success. If that is coming off as cold, I am sorry, but I just think it is true.

 

I wasn't calling your posts cold I was afraid my post would sound cold. I can see your point also, I just get upset especially with our situation with our local 1A school who didn't play cawood for years and then when they felt they were good enough they wanted to play and now we are back to them not being very good and picking and choosing when to play us. I guess I was kind of taking that out on the wrong people. It's good that we can act like civil people on hear and actually have educated discussions without getting into arguments. I still hope my Bears win though!

Believe it or not, I just checked Calpreps predictions and they have LC winning by 1.

Go figure.

You had 8-2 in the preseason, so that would match up.

I just checked the lungbuster/Mama Bear preps predictions and it has the Black Bears favored to win by two TD's. My prediction for the season for the Black Bears is 8-2. I think this game will be a good ole sloberknocker with the Bears doing the slobbering and the knocking, I think I picked earlier in the thread a Bears Win 42-20 I will stick with that. Go Bears!

It may be Larry Phillips. He had some good teams at Lincoln County, I think, but he was 1-8 in one year at Evarts.

 

Cumberland had four or five college players on a couple of teams in the 1990s but couldn't get past Pikeville.

 

It depends on how far back you want to go in coaching.

Ed Miracle won four state titles in the 1960s at Lynch. Boyd Fox was a very good coach at Cawood in the 1970s and Cullivan was tremendous in the 80s. Harlan had some good coaches in the 60s , Rick McCrary had a great run in the 80s and Donahue rebuilt the program in the 90s. Hunter was a legend from the 50s to the 70s at Evarts, and Musick had a regional championship team at Evarts in 1990.

I don't remember if Hillard Howard was still there when Cumberland should have beaten them in 1992.

Harlan County teams did better than most during Howard's run at Pikeville. Evarts ended Pikeville's regional domination in 1990 after they had won three straight Class A state titles. Cumberland beat Pikeville in 1986 in the regional finals on the way to the state championship game.

I was at the game at Pikeville you guys are speaking of.

 

Cumberland had Massey, Tinsley, Baskin, Ravazee on that team to name a few. Baskin went down with a knee injury seems like late in the first half. Seems like there were some um, circumstances that game. I cant remember if the score was 8-6 or 12-8 but I believe Cumberland had a TD called back on a mystery penalty. So I'm not sure Frazier shoould shoulder all the blame on that.

 

Phillips I spoke of, is Larry Phillips. As a prepster corrected me a couple of years ago, He had a state runner up team at Lincoln Co.

 

Also in that mix of Coaches was Ron Cain who won a state title at Seneca in 65, and a state runner up at Cumberland in 86. In 86 Cumberland prolly would have won the game had Maggard not broken his left wrist. Ended up losing 12-8.

If you are expecting Lynn camp to just lay down to some hard hitting football, you would be mistaken.

(LC is barely recognized by their own school system, so we have been carrying a nasty chip for about 80 years. I guess if the "chip factor" gets figured in, we have the edge on that one!)

New Harlan came out on top over Letcher Central! 8-6. Coach Howard and Coach Larkey got to witness a battle between two really good mountain middle school football teams. I'd say they were both smiling when they left. :thumb:

Man did Frazier ever have the talent in the early to mid 90's @ Cumberland.
