What a truly sad story. This happens way too many times. I am an employee of one the the Big 3 auto manufacturers. I have submitted an idea to our management team of a sensor similar to the front seat air bag disabler. The sensor would have a chime (similar to lights being on) when a level of weight is detected in the back seat. There would be a button that could be pushed to override the chime if the person has something in the back seat (i.e. groceries, etc.). I think this would be a minor inconvenience and would be worth it if it prevented one child death.

Someone needs to invent a device, that would automatically roll down the windows of a vehicle, if detected a child is in a restraint seat and a certain temperature index has been reached.

A detection/warning system would actually be a pretty easy thing to invent. But just try to get the automakers to go for it. Maybe if it was an optional thing.

I think they already have systems that tell you to buckle up when you start your car and anti-theft devices that detect motion. Seems to me, a variation on either of these themes would be very simple.

I hope they come up with something. I would have it in my car. Not that would ever forget my kids in the car, but like BF said, they have the seatbelt alarm, and thats a no brainer. JUST CLICK IT. Car manufacturers need to really think about this. A law would be great too.

I really don't understand how this keeps happening? Stress or not, how are you unaware that you have passengers in your vehicle? If you're that pre-occupied, maybe you have no business even driving a car.

I totally agree. Busy or not Busy, you don't get so off the right track of mind to forget you have your child in the car. I know there is a debate on if she never had to have the child in the car with her. that may have played a role in why she forgot about her. But seriously, all the more reason to be more aware of the baby. Not used to having her in there. Oh my, its is so sad and scary that it happens so often. And apparently FF heard on the news that it was a year anniversary this week of the dad ( possibly a teacher) that left his baby in the back seat and they died as well.

From what I understand...NOTHING!:mad:

On the outside, the device sounds great...but, lets face it, people will not use it or disable it. It is a law to use a seat belt and there are little alarms to let you know when someone is not strapped in, however, it does not keep everyone using. I actually worked at a place where clients with mental disabilities would be transported...the seat belt alarms were taken out of the vans due to the clients unbuckling them....they hated the beeping. Instead of making sure they stayed buckled, the alarms were just done away with.....This idea you all have would work in a perfect world, however, this is just not a perfect world.

And, I hate to say this, but, are we at all sure that leaving the kids in the car is just a simple mistake...it might be for some, however, like most of you stated, and I agree, how could you forget you have your child in the car? It does not wash with me at all....

I would use it if my children were still that young. Not that I could see ever forgetting my children, but I am totally in favor of taking the element of chance completely out of the picture. Besides, why would anyone override it? If they are determined to leave their child in the car, they deserve to be prosecuted. However, this device would greatly reduce the accidental deaths.

OH, don't get me wrong...I would use it as well....but, there are some pretty stange people out there. Why would a person disable a seat belt alarm with adults who can be violent? Especially when they would undo the seat belts? I had to do some exta duty one time and I did not realize at the time that the alarms were disabled. I got my hair pulled and wrapped around a clients hand when I was driving....I did not see it coming because it happened so fast. If the alarms had been left alone, I would have gotten a beep. Anyhow, some people might think it is annoying so they would disable it...don't put it past some of these individuals....and, it would be the ones that would leave the child in the car in the fist place IMO.

What do you want? She is already dead inside, wouldnt you think? Anybody that makes a mistake that costs them their child's life is sentenced to a life of anguish and misery. So what, you lock her up so she doesnt do it again?

 

On a side note, for all of you people who enjoy this sort of morbid stuff you can listen to the mom's 911 call on http://www.gocincy.com. I for one just want to forget about this whole thing and hope someone develops something that will prevent it from happening again.
