She was way too calm for me. I would have been a wreck and not able to talk, someone would have probably had to call for me. That is awful. Made me sick hearing her calmness.

 

I agree with you - she was much too calm in her voice. The decision IMO was wrong not to prosecute her - I just don't understand how you can accidentally leave a child in a car all day without knowing it. I mean, I realize people forget from time to time but no matter how you look at it - its still neglect. Yes, I realize she will pay for this for the rest of her life with quilt in her soul.

I'm sure involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment were considered, but determined not to apply due to lack of criminal intent. I feel rather certain that if drugs/alcohol played into this situation, there had been prior instances of abuse, or if she had intentionally left the child in the car (as many people have done if the past, even though they may genuinely have not realized the dangers of doing so for even a short period), she would have been prosecuted.

 

At the end of the day, this was a horrible, tragic situation that did not deserve to be prosecuted. I am certain the prosecutor's office looked closely into this woman's background and whether there was any prior history of abuse or similar pattern of neglectful conduct. I wasn't aware of any follow-up stories on this woman in which anyone had anything bad to say about her. Nothing to indicate anything other than that she was a good person and a good mother who made a terrible mistake that she will live with the rest of her life.

 

As for those who say it could never happen to you - you may be right. Then again, you may be wrong. I'll bet this woman would have put herself into that former category just a few short months ago. I have done some pretty stupid things in my own personal life that I would have sworn I'd never do. We're human. We all make mistakes. Sadly, some of them have tragic consequences.

 

As far as her 911 phone call, it's very hard to know what a "normal" and "proper" reaction should be. I think I, too, would have been hysterical during the call. But shock is a funny thing and can cause people to behave in unusual ways. This woman went through something much more traumatic than any of us will (hopefully) ever have to go through in our lives. Until you walk in her shoes - and let's hope none of us ever do - it's hard to say what the "appropriate" reaction should have been.
