August 19, 200818 yr I don't see it as a vested interest as much as part of the "death and taxes" department. I don't know, maybe I do now that I think about it. Since you pay fees, don't you feel compelled to demand results? Both from the educators and your child?
August 19, 200818 yr So no one commented on the combination of Starbucks and Waffle House... Would have, but....well...it seemed to stand alone in it's wackado-ish-ness.
August 19, 200818 yr Since you pay fees, don't you feel compelled to demand results? Both from the educators and your child? If they paid me for my kids to go to school, I'd demand results from them. I'm actually not as hard on the educators, as long as they take the time and effort needed. If they need some additional cash from me to get this done, I can handle it. Most of the teachers in our district would surpass all demands I could set for them...
August 19, 200818 yr If all people looked at the taxes they pay as "tuition", and demanded excellence of both the schools and the students, public education as a whole would be alot better off. I always get the impression that most people think of public education as "free" and expect that the system provide excellence, yet make minimal demand on their kids for a decent ROI.

August 19, 200818 yr How do those fees that qryche is having to pay compare with other public school districts ? Is this something new to public school systems this year ? Higher Fees ? My son attends Ludlow and the fees for high school students is $95.00. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
August 19, 200818 yr Two in high school at Beechwood, over $500.00 for the two of them. Tough to take, along with the other expenses at the beginning of the school year. Unfortunately the budgets for all of our schools keep getting smaller and smaller. I just look at it as an investment in my kids. It helps take some of the sting out of it.
August 19, 200818 yr Chose . Right and we didn't complain one bit about it . We just tightened our belts and paid the fees and tuition that was required , and the taxes . Then you are the first person I've heard that didn't. I've worked with MANY people who have sent their children to private schools and to a person they complained about the cost. Particularly when something changed locally where they could not put it in the collection basket or some such thing. It prevented them from claiming it as religious giving on their taxes.

August 19, 200818 yr Author Since you pay fees, don't you feel compelled to demand results? Both from the educators and your child? I'd like to know why my daughter had to pay $10 twice for the same Spanish 1 Workbook. This makes no sense at all. So they are going to do the work twice:rolleyes:. I guess times have changed because I remember showing up to school and never being nickel/dimed like you do these days. The costs of kids being educated is growing and growing. When you think about lunch costs going up as well. My 8th grade boy eats $3 worth of food everyday and it all starts to add up over the long haul. I am finding myself sacrificing many things I normally do in order to account for some of these costs. This includes packing my lunch daily and being dropped off at work to avoid parking and the costs of eating out.

Kind of a pain, but the trade off is that you likely eat healthier for it. I know we didnt have to pay any fees in our day, but it is definately a different world today! We didn't have computers, high tech labs, a variety of art supplies etc. I remember a rare workbook, usually Phonics which is hardly ever taught anymore. The most important machine in our school was the mimeograph machine...........ahhhhhhh remember that smell? I am pretty sure my mom bought us a binder, pencils, pens and paper for school and that was about it. After paying school fees, each of my high schoolers had a list with $100.00 worth of things to buy. Last year both needed a $150.00 calculator as well. It has been a $700.00 week so far, just for school fees and supplies! That is an awful lot for most families. You just have to know it is coming and plan ahead......not that we did that...spent most of our money on vacation! Seemed like the thing to do at the time:sssh:
August 19, 200818 yr Paid $341 for my Junior yesterday at Highlands. School fee was 211 then another 130 for a required binder and 2 workbooks. Those were for the AP classes she takes. Then we will have to pay for the AP exams that she will take later in the school year.
August 19, 200818 yr Last year books and fees were around $880, this year down to $440 counting a $159 book credit from pvs year's books. What I do is this. I don't look at a single item on the bill, don't listen to others complain about cost, and throw away my receipt soon as I get home. Complaining never made it cheaper in the past, and I gotta pay it anyway. Now, it's smooth sailing for the rest of the year. Until dances, and pictures, and......
