August 18, 200818 yr I am curious what some of the school fees are around the state. I am amazed that each of my daughter's Freshman classes has a separate $12 fee, one has a $24 fee, throw in costs of workbooks and lab fees as well as a $45 General Fee to the school and the grand total is around $220. This is just for one child. Funding for schools must be just god awful if they are expecting parents to come up with this type of money just to put your kid in a seat. Another question, If someone doesnt pay the fees do they deny their right to an education?
August 18, 200818 yr All day kindergarten: $2,080 and I still have to pay the same $125 fee that I also have to pay for the 4th grader... I don't seem to mind, for some reason...
August 18, 200818 yr Author All day kindergarten: $2,080 and I still have to pay the same $125 fee that I also have to pay for the 4th grader... I don't seem to mind, for some reason... All Day Kindergarten is a great bargain, I did that with mine but I dont remember it being that much. Wow, that was 7 and 8 yrs ago, that is depressing. The Buck twenty Five school fee for each kid though seems a little crazy.
August 18, 200818 yr Our school does not charge fees for required classes. For some elective classes we do. The textbook rental fee for all kids for all books is a flat $75, which in and of itself is cheaper then buying any one book would be. For the classes I teach, our fees are $10 for Chemistry I, Advanced Physics, and Conceptual Physics, $15 for Chemistry II and $25 for Advanced Independent Chemistry Lab. One of the projects that I do in my physics classes has a kit that costs $30. If each student pays their $10 fee, then I take $10 out of my class funds to cover the rest. Chemistry II gets to take home a silver plated (via chemical reaction) erlenmyer flask and Advanced Independent Chemistry Lab gets a cool pair of goggles that they can use in college. What happens if students don't pay? They are not allowed the privelege of attending prom until all debts are paid. They do not receive report cards or transcripts either. You would be amazed at how much money we collect in early April! No one ever argues that they can afford the $300 prom dress or the $150 limo, but not the $125 fee for their books/classes. And yes...the state of finances of public education is awful.

I am sure when schools figure out what the fees should be they factor in a percentage of students who just cant pay at all to cover their costs. I hope I am not sounding like a tightwad on here just trying to understand what the fees go for and you did a great job explaining that for your science classes. Thanks

Thanks Students that are on free lunch do not pay any fees. I think that those on reduced lunch prices pay half of the total. As far as the absorption question, I guess it goes the same that it does with taxes.

August 19, 200818 yr You choose to do both... Yes, and never regretted a dime paid to either the taxes or the tuition.
