Endorsing Obama is probably more about Powell distancing himself from Bush than it is based on any heartfelt agreement on issues. Powell would also be a logical choice for an Obama cabinet position if he wants to go the bipartisan cabinet route.

This endorsement should really help Obama among the approximately 6% of African Americans who have not already decided to vote for him.

Most other Americans will simply see another black man who has decided to vote along racial lines. If Powell has plans to run for office someday, then this endorsement is almost a no-brainer.

 

Could this endorsement land Powell on Obama's short list of potential running mates?

 

First, I don't believe this story to be true. However, should it come to fruition I do not think the white folks would dismiss it as "looking out for one another." IMO Colin has attained one of those statuses that , unlike most others, race doesn't come into play.

It would be huge if it turns out. His lack of a McCain endorsement already speaks loud and clear.

Not much straining is required to realize that Colin Powell is a moderate who has supported far more of the positions McCain holds than the ones that Obama holds. Awhile back, conservative J. C. Watts also stated that he was considering casting his vote for Obama - do you believe that Watts has become a liberal and considering voting for Obama because he suddenly agrees with him on the issues?

 

Maybe Powell has some kind of personal grudge against McCain - I do not know the history between the two men. What I do know is that in the past, Powell has not supported the kind of policies that Obama is advocating.

Obama made himself a left-wing wacko with his voting history and choices of friends and mentors. Anybody who voted repeatedly to block the passage of a law requiring newborn babies to receive medical treatment cannot be defined as a moderate without a pretty convincing expression of regret and remorse for his actions.
