Three Seventh Region boys' basketball coaches face possible suspensions for violating Kentucky High School Athletic Association rules about the period when school officials are prohibited from watching their athletes play.

 

Administrators at Jeffersontown, Seneca and Manual confirmed they have reported the violations to the KHSAA. J'town's Jeff Morrow and Seneca's Steve Sergeant -- both head coaches -- and Manual assistant John Cole are involved.

 

School officials said the violations involve coaches attending the Kentucky HoopFest -- an NCAA-sanctioned summer tournament -- July 9 in Louisville.

It makes sense to prohibit coaching the kids, but attending a public event as a spectator or in another function is a different matter IMO.

Interesting. A head coach in Laurel Co. was fired a few years ago for just this kind of thing.

I disagree, a rule is a rule, leaves the window of opportunity for contact in a direct or indirect way and in todays times that is too much leadway. This rule is broken and has been broken so many times in the past, I am for one glad that the KHSAA is taking a stance.

What is the purpose of the dead period? Isn't it to enforce no organized (or disorganized) practice? If the Coach were to go to a cookout where there were players engaging in a pickup game, would the coach be in violation?

The rules are clear. Good grief, take the family on vacation. Go fishing. Something.

I agree also. Its an easy rule to follow. Who is to say that these coaches are not requiring them to play AAU. The Seneca coach had his team fundraising during the dead period and said he did not know he was violating the rule. Requiring your kids to fundraise during the dead period to me is worse than just watching them play. The first day of the hoops fest was the last day of the dead period. How difficult would it have been to wait one more day or check the KHSAA website to make sure of the dates. The dead period is discussed in every rules meeting that the KHSAA conducts for each sport.

One of the 3 coaches was already on probation..what will happen to him!!

I know Coach Sergeant and he's first class. As well are, A.D. Greenwald and A.D. "Z". Sounds like they are handling.

Stupid rule. But a well-known, well-publicized rule that all coaches know, or should know, and 99% follow. And if you choose not to follow it, you should be punished.

The KHSAA cannot be so strict on one rule and lax on others , make them clear and simple and then I think they can be followed. I don't have much faith in them.

It seems a little petty, but a rule is a rule. I do tend to believe Coach Seargent when he said that he thought the dead period ended on July 9th and that he made an honest mistake. Wow Coach Morrow is likely to be suspended 2 years in a row. Of course this time seems much less serious.

The rule is clear and simple and hundreds of other coaches followed it.

I agree that the dates should be easy to follow, they are clearly posted in the schedule for each year. If I understand correctly, there is no insurance coverage during the "non-season". Other than that, what is the reason for the dead period?
