Nor is he the guy that hit Ken Griffey Jr. third all summer and put Aaron Harang's season (and perhaps even Edinson Volquez's) at risk with some bonehead pitching-staff management in San Diego. I feel, it will take 2-3 more years to be competitive now, unless the Reds are able to bring in several key players, to help produce in the OF, C and getting on base. What are your thoughts....

I told my father there is one big difference between Jockety in St. Louis and Jockety in Cincinnati. Yes, he won't be able to spend as much money with the Reds, BUT the biggest difference is Larusa. Dear ole Walt deserves the credit for making the moves, but Larusa was a big part of that. I don't trust Dusty at all. If the Reds win, it will be after Dusty leaves, hopefully the pieces are still in place after his demise. If the Brewers don't have Sheets or Sabathia next year, they will take a step back, but they will still be a decent team. The Cubs will be good and the Cardinals always seem to be in the mix. Even if the Reds are better next year or in two years, it will be very tough competing in the Central.

Both Griffey & Dunn were in the last years of their contract. I think they're both great moves. I also think that this is a step forward. Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto and Edwin Encarnacion will be here for a long time hopefully. Throw in Keppinger (maybe) and that's a solid lineup. Let's use the rest of this season to see who can and cannot play in the minors. Personally, I think most of the young talent in the minors is a few years away; however, getting them some MLB experience now isn't a bad idea. It won't win many games, but we weren't winning anyway. We can use the extra money that we saved by trading our 2 "superstars" and go get a bigtime free agent. Personally, I'll be pulling for them to go after CC Sabathia. Now if we could only get rid of CoCo...

What worries me, is the advent of the new talent, having to carry the load and the glaring problems, at some positions. If the pitching, can get more consistent in '09 and the new players, whomever they are, be able to be productive at the MLB level, than it could happen earlier. Hope I'm wrong on the time table, as they've been woeful for a while. I don't envy the task, Jockety has in front of him.

Phillips has been fairly outspoken about how he wants it to be his team, and this is his chance. We'll see if #4 can deliver or not...

I agree with that; however, Phillips has been so outspoken about how he wants to be the leader & thinks that he is capable of it. I think the opportunity is his to lose. Personally, I hope Votto or Keppy take a leadership role. Keppinger just hasn't been the same since he's been off the DL.

Kepp is a nice player, but if you have a role player leading your team your in trouble.
