What do we do with the kids whose parents do not take the initiative/opportunity to discuss sex and appropriate birth control methods (including abstinence)/

I have said I have no problem with TEACHING about birth control in schools (as long as abstinence and the potentail consequences are also taught). I have a problem when birth control is distributed.

 

That's tacit approval IMVHO.

Speaking from my experience, we had a program called Choosing to Wait. One of the religion teachers would lead the program, but it was mainly done with Seniors. The basis of the program was that the seniors and religion teacher would teach the freshman about the consequences of having premarital sex through various skits, talks, games, etc. I'm not really sure how effective it is as I've never been exposed to how it's done elsewhere.

 

It did nothing IMO and was a poor attempt at teaching them things they really needed to know.

I am not saying all teenagers are having sex. Abstinence is probably a good idea in the long run. But if you can't wait, there is not guilt or shame in this. People are going to have sex, people aren't going to have sex...what you do in the bedroom or any other location; really shouldn't matter. Abstinence is a personal value, and personal values are not the school's place to teach. Teaching abstinence is fine, but lets teach all sides of the issue. The scare tactics no longer work.

 

And this is why we are decaying as a society.

Heck in the other thread, it was said that the responsibility of a girl having an abortion was the people in church that might say mean things about her.

But that does not mean I do not have religious beliefs;nor morals.

Can you name me, from a historical context, a great civilization in the history of the world, or ANY serious religion, that did not advocate chastity and sexual self-control? There have been none.

But it is there ultimate right to explore and indulge themselves sexually. Morals pertaining to sex have been ever changing for hundreds of years. Not too long ago, it would be considered immoral to sleep in the same bed with your wife, all the time. Today it is a common place among mostly all couples. I am sure when this trend started;people screamed about decaying morals. I am sure that there have been no great civilizations in the past that have been able to survive without sexual self control, or chastity. But I believe that we are different and can be different.

But on the other hand, is it the right of government to use the money of taxpayers (me) to teach something that I find to be morally reprehensible?

 

It simply isn't the governments' right.

If we don't, "we" still have to live with the conseqences of young girls that become pregnant.

 

Also, whose morals do we go with? Even if we want to say that we want to use Christian morals, well, then which group? Catholic? Protestant (which we can subdivide)?

 

The facts are that pregnancy can be avoided in the following ways:

 

1. Abstinence - the only sure method; cheapest, too

2. Condoms

3. Oral contraceptives

etc, etc, etc.

 

Reasons why you should avoid pregnancy:

 

1. Pregnancy is difficult condition for a developing teenage body.

2. Babies cost lots of money.

3. You can't go to prom if you are giving birth to a baby.

4. You get less sleep at night.

etc, etc, etc

 

Those aren't morals. Those are facts. Teach facts, not morals, because we all don't agree on what those are.
