If we don't, "we" still have to live with the conseqences of young girls that become pregnant.

 

Also, whose morals do we go with? Even if we want to say that we want to use Christian morals, well, then which group? Catholic? Protestant (which we can subdivide)?

 

The facts are that pregnancy can be avoided in the following ways:

 

1. Abstinence - the only sure method; cheapest, too

2. Condoms

3. Oral contraceptives

etc, etc, etc.

 

Reasons why you should avoid pregnancy:

 

1. Pregnancy is difficult condition for a developing teenage body.

2. Babies cost lots of money.

3. You can't go to prom if you are giving birth to a baby.

4. You get less sleep at night.

etc, etc, etc

 

Those aren't morals. Those are facts. Teach facts, not morals, because we all don't agree on what those are.

But I am not saying that we should teach my morality in PUBLIC schools. I am not saying that we should teach that pre-marital sex is wrong because of the Christian 10 commandments or anything in the Bible.

 

What I am saying is that allocation of tax resources towards something that goes against my morality (contraceptives) is wrong. I shouldn't be forced to support something that I am against, just as atheists should not be forced to support public school prayer. I don't advocate teaching morality or immorality in the public schools.

 

You are saying that religious-based morality can not be taught in the schools, but things that do go against my morality are OK. You are the one who is making exceptions.

Ok. Fair enough. What do we do with those kids whose parents do not care enough to discuss the issues/morality/choices with them? You and your church, I assume, will teach your morals to your children, including not having pre-marital sex and not using contraception. Your children will then make informed choices, hopefully in line with your morals.

 

What do we do with those children whose parents tell them nothing? Do we not say anything either, and allow them to possibly end up pregnant, or with sexually transmitted diseases or even AIDS/HIV? What is the solution there?

Then we get people who seem to think it is their responsibility to do this to donate the money to fund it. Surely there are enough people in this country with big enough hearts and enough concern for their fellow man to fund this aren't there?

 

Regardless of how altruistic your reasoning may be there are some things that public funds should not be used for.

As someone who made her living dealing with these very issues for 28 years I feel I can speak on this.

 

It would be a wonderful world if all parents would sit down and talk to their children about sex but most don't. It would be a wonderful world if kids would go to parents to discuss sex and birth control but most don't. It would a wonderful world if people wouldn't have sex until they were married but most don't. It would be a wonderful world if people weren't dying from AIDS but they are.

 

If you talk to your children and discuss sex and birth control great for you. But if you think that just because you talk to your child and they tell you they won't have sex, and you believe them, then you are truly fooling yourself. Now I'm not saying that all kids are having sex becuase we know that isn't a true fact but most are and that's just a true fact also.

 

I have seen 11 and 12 year olds come in for a pregnancy test and they are pregnant. I've seen parents come in raising all kinds of heck becaues they have found birth control pills that they got from us. These same parents destroyed the pills and a few months later they, mother and daughter would be back, and the daughter would be pregnant.

 

I don't believe in premartial sex at all but I also don't want a young child destroying their lives before they ever get a chance to live it.

 

I know we'd all like to think that our children aren't doing this stuff but chances are...............they are. So I think we need to get off our high horses and understand that our children aren't perfect and find ways to help protect them. Protect them from unwanted pregnancies and from a horrible disease that can kill them.

However, I still don't think school is the place to pass out birth control. Especially, without the parents knowledge. I would be furious to know that a school handed out condoms to my son and did not make me aware of it. If my son gets a girl pregnant then he will bear the responsibility of being a parent. His dad and I will make sure of it. There will be no double standard in this household . . . where the girl and her parents get strapped with a child and no help. HE WILL BE MADE TO BE RESPONSIBLE. I was stating what I have found to be true for almost 30 years and feel that I have a right to address my opinion. If you took this personal then I am truly sorry. I would guess around 2/3rds of graduating seniors have had sex. I would also assume whatever the true percentage is, it's going up every year.
