July 25, 200818 yr I find it VERY hard to believe that these guys just all of a sudden started acting out once Krag got to town. The only thing that I've heard differently is that Krag doesn't allow it to happen, and Petrino did. The reason he supposedly didn't have any disciplinary problems while he was there is because he swept them under the rug. As I've said before, if it takes three 6-6 seasons to get the bad eggs out of the program, then I'm all for it. JMO.

July 25, 200818 yr What I'm saying is, that they weren't acting up under Petrino. ..and you know this how?
July 25, 200818 yr What I'm saying is, that they weren't acting up under Petrino. I don't think anyone will ever be able to convince me of that...
July 25, 200818 yr ..and you know this how?The only time I recall anyone arrested was over a paint-gun assault/prank. I don't think Petrino had manipulative power over LPD to stop them from arresting his players.

Again, you're confusing actual arrests with problems. By your standard, Barry Switzer didnt' have that many problems either.

I also find it hard to believe that these guys all of a sudden started acting out after Petrino left, .. however it could be any number of reasons (I am not saying which ones apply as I really don't know) (1) Petrino was able to sweep most of it under the rug (2) Krag is believed to be lenient and some kids think they can get away with more (3) Petrino did a better job at keeping those few in line (4) Krag is cracking the whip and weeding out a few bad eggs (5) The team leadership dynamic has changed and without certain leaders (Brohm and others) they don't have the same type of leaders in the locker room (6) Not winning does indeed change one's mindset on more than just football I wish I had the answer. I think if Kragthorpe can get these problems dealt with and have .500 or better seasons the next 2 years, UL will be pointed in a better direction. However, if he doesn't, then it will be harder to believe that Petrino was the problem. Only time will tell. I think Coach Kragthorpe seems to be a class guy trying to run a top notch program and hope he succeeds. Continued success at both UL and UK would certainly continue this upward trend we have seen in the level of play at the high school level the past several years. I certainly hope that UL wins every game they play (except for 1) every season!
July 25, 200818 yr The only time I recall anyone arrested was over a paint-gun assault/prank. I don't think Petrino had manipulative power over LPD to stop them from arresting his players. Maybe not but I have heard stories of a few players getting preferential treatment from some members of the LPD. Most notably a guy who is the 2nd (maybe 3rd?) string QB in a small city in Wisconsin.

The arrests are the sticky point. Its easy to blame dismissals on Krag just being tougher, but I doubt the police got tougher once Krag showed up.

I agree, but things tend to snowball. Take the Bengals, for example. Once the arrests started happening, some of the players were targeted (sometimes justly, sometimes unjustly) and the arrests continued to pile up.
July 25, 200818 yr These kids were bad, real bad while Bobby was here. When he disciplined it was with physical punishments, Coach K does it differently and I support him for that. I don't care what Bobby Petrino has to say in regards to Louisville anymore.

I don't care what Bobby Petrino has to say in regards to Louisville anymore. My information is that Petrino spent pretty much his entire waking life there at the football complex, with the players. He sat on them, and they didn't have opportunity. I don't believe that should be necessary. We should be able to expect that 18-22 year olds be able to behave themselves. I'm not saying perfection. There will be incidents. But, offenses serious enough to get arrested for, that's inexcusable on the part of the players. We don't sit on the rest of the student body, and we expect them to behave.
July 25, 200818 yr Author I don't know all the nuances and such behind it, but one former starter last year did say things were much looser, as well as a few others, under Kragthorpe than Petrino. From practice to the cleanliness of the weightroom. This individual also said that he thought the prior regime worked harder and and would be all over you for minor mistakes in practice. Now in fairness to Kragthorpe, any coach who follows someone with success, it will be tough and they will inevitably be compared to the prior coach. There is going to be that adjustment period...particularly for the players. You see it all the time at various levels...the pros, college, and high school. Some buy-in, some don't. In regards to preferential treatment from the authority, there are situations I bet that this occurs. I knew a guy who went to LexCath and was friends with one of the Pitino kids. He said there was more than one time that Coach Pitino got a call late at night and had to scurry out of the house. I would tend to think by in large you rarely see this happen, but I could see it happening. Kragthorpe needs to be given some time to place his stamp on the program, at least 3-4 recruiting classes, unless they just totally bomb (3-9, 4-8 type seasons)
July 26, 200818 yr A great many of the players that have been dismissed but without court incident had to do with the increased drug testing. BP had a different philosophy on that. Kragthorpe is less in your face 24/7, but has stricter standards on some issues. Different guys respond to different coaches.
July 26, 200818 yr Petrino IS a magician... more of a evil warlock, but still, David Copperfield couldn't have done as good a job at making certain behaviors 'disappear'.
