Championship Built on Transfers. Is This Honorable?

Featured Replies

My kid's teams have been a part of a couple of "National Championships", 5 State Championships, multiple Regional and District Championships; and a bunch of near misses at the various levels. All the victories were accomplished with NO transfers, move-ins, borrowed players, etc.; and virtually all the "near misses" were to teams with them. I can honestly say I'm very proud of the coaches and parents of these teams for playing with the hands they were dealt; and nothing felt better than beating those "created" teams.

As a side note-- Our kid's HS hoop's team (smaller school), which was an outstanding middle school squad; had the opportunity to accept a "transfer" onto their high school program (same class--current major D-1 recruit) and the Head Coach declined. Did it cost them a potential state championship? Quite possibly? Did they break several school records without him--Yes!! Do I (and the other parents) feel better about their accomplishments because of that coach's decision--Absolutely!!

I certainly understand the "win at all costs mentality" because I've seen it up close and personal. But I'll chose to root for the teams that do it the right way, and let the rest of you relish the "paper trophies". Sleep tight, and may your plastic trophies keep you warm!!!!

You're comments, are disappointing about doing it the right way. These are young men and women, who have achieved a success on the field of play and you're stating, it wasn't done the the "right way", because you didn't accept a transfer.

Hog wash....

Because a team has or doesn't have success, means it has the "win at all cost mentality", it means their is a group of parents, coaches and community support, who care about kids and not want their own to achieve the glory.

Not allowing a "transfer", into a system is selfish and ridiculous, not only to the player and his family, but to the program. I'm glad most, don't have this attitude, of own first regardless of the best interest of a new arrival. I wonder what that mirror reflects, when those who made this decision to not let him play, is gazed into.

StickerMann, your coach should've said that because anything less would've been a KHSAA violation.

And if that coach was at my kid's school, I'd be at the Board the next day. It's not his job to decide who does and does not go to his school. As S3 stated, selfish act of the coach but also selfishness from the parents. Of course they don't mind a D-1 recruit didn't transfer in, that's more playing time for their kids.

I don't understand how allowing a kid to play on your team that's transfered to your school is 'win at all costs'. A coach has ZERO bearing on who is at their school and who is not. Their job is to keep the players that will help their program. IF they're recruiting, that's a different story. Since the people we are talking about have not, kudos to them for building a program people want to play in...

This is one reason I proudly wear a State Championship today because Mason played with Home grown talent. Barner was not a factor last year and the Setty's moved to Mason long ago when the boys were in grade school. If you are going to transfer for athletic purposes if should be before High school and then the legit transfers (Job changes) would be accepted with much less scurinty. This is the main reason why 90% of the crowd cheers for Mason at the State Tourney.

I have always cheered for whoever represents our region (10th) Mason Co Pendleton Co, Montgomery Co ect. Because I respect the teams, players, coaches and want our region to be well represtented...not because they have "home grown talent"

Question, was Middleton always from Mason? Asking because I'm curious.

Yeah, because a state title would be worth so much less if they transfered in high school. Please...:rolleyes:

His dad was coach at Rowan Co, then went on to Harrison Co I believe, before settling down in Mason Co. Yes his job took him to these different schools....just like other student athletes parents get new jobs and move...Does it really matter if it is grade school or high school?

Ethan King came from Bracken Co..he was not "home grown".

Aw, fooey! I'll go ahead and answer my own question. Middleton is not originally from Mason Co., Ethan King is from Bracken Co.. So, sumo, you may want to turn in your state championship momentos and the like since they were attained with "non-homegrown" kids on the squad. So, we can debate the honor in Mason's state championship. 90% were rooting for Mason because they liked the way they play. They respected the way Darius Miller handled himself and that he was committed to play for the state university. The majority of those there live close enough to Lex. that the drive was a no brainer from Maysville. In no shape, form, or fashion was the support because their team was "homegrown". If that was the belief, well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Wake up people!

p.s. Stickermann would call that a "paper trophy". Now, think about that for a moment. Think Darius, Setty and the gang are worried about that honor/dishonor garbage?

Me either.

For all of those who piled on here and misrepresented what I said, please reread the original post? I will stand by my belief that championships won with transfers, move-ins, etc. cheapen the entire process!!

With all this outpouring of support, and discovering that "everybody in the state has used an out-of-district kid at one time or another"; its amazing to me that there's been the outcry there's been against private schools in this state. The vast majority of them use their "home grown kids" (to use your phrase), and lose many more to the local publics; but they still get a huge deal of flak as they MAY have no defined boundries.

Guessing from the response to my comments, that it doesn't really matter to most how a team gets together; just that they all show up wearing the same uniform on game day?? That's fine, but I suspect from the outcries I've heard over the years, and the very existance of a "Public/Private" forum on this site; that's not really the case?

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree?? Also guessing you're all Yankee's fans; and it was "plastic" trophies, not "paper"?? :D

You are exactly right on this point.

With regard to boundaries, they have never been a disadvantage for many public schools. It only becomes a disadvantage when they are not on top.

I'm not trying to pile on, just poking fun. Simply saying that I think it's silly to demean the accomplishments of a team simply because kids didn't grow up there. That's just silly to me. I applaud your son's team on it's accomplishments. But no more than if they'd have won with a foreign exchange student, for crying out loud. My point about Mason was simply to point out that it happens everywhere, even if a team's own fans are oblivious to it.

And by the way, it was "paper and plastic".:D

And let me finish by saying this-----Please, we can continue discussing this topic here, but let's not make this a public/private issue. Feel free to start one if you like, but put it in the proper forum.:thumb:

What we are talking about is people who have not been proven to have recruited. Personally I think this happens all the time, but is very difficult to prove. Now, don't take this as me picking on Scott County. I think recruiting happens all over the state. Becuase it can rarely be proven, I believe the KHSAA should just make it OK to recruit. Wouldn't that make everyone step up the quality of their programs in order to attract the best players?

I am not trading in anything. Someone said on here that Home Grown talent was kids that came in the lower grades and not a transfer during High school. Barner was the only one like that. King transferred before high school. How is Middleton not home grown. His dad lived in Mason Co all his life, graduated from Mason, went to Georgetown and coached at other schools. Got an Superintendent job at Mason well before high school. If that is not home grown talent what is???? When Mason, Clark, Warren Central, Hazard or who ever plays either Lex Cath of Scott CO in the State tourney, 90 percent is rooting against Cath or Scott.

With all this outpouring of support, and discovering that "everybody in the state has used an out-of-district kid at one time or another"; its amazing to me that there's been the outcry there's been against private schools in this state. I'm not taking one side or the other of the public/private debate, but if you notice many, many of the people in this thread that are saying to let Jackson/Euton play, are private school supporters.
