Championship Built on Transfers. Is This Honorable?

Featured Replies

If I'm understanding some of the posts, it's okay to have your own players grow up but not include, any players that have moved into a system.

If that is true, which is worse.

(1) Those that leave a system, they have been a part of for years, but decide to leave after their Sophomore year.

(2) Those that move into a system, from another school. Is the school which accepts them, less honorable.

I'll offer one more comment. Is it honorable, for a class A school of 300 or less, to play against 5A or 6A schools, of 1,800 or more to compete for a title.

Good questions. What do you think?

I'm not referring to the few who incidentally move in or out. I think we all know that I'm talking about powerhouse programs filling needs with players from outside.

And I'm not referring to past, present, or future champions.

Filling needs? This is a High School, that has grown tremendously in student population and has success, in not only Basketball but other sports, both men and women.

Parents are accepting jobs, to businesses in the area and surely no one would fault them for that. At the same time, families choosing to attend a school which has a great tradition in Basketball, is perfectly logical.

I have no problem with either, thus why I asked the question. I also have no problem, with the A schools playing the 5A/6A schools.

You seem to be referring to a specific high school or incident. I'm not.

Again, I'm not asking what legal or fair. I'm asking if one should be proud of a championship won under such conditions. Apparently, most are.

The goal of any High School program, should be to excel and strive for a championship. Those who attain the goal, are the envy of others.

Those who don't attain the goal, are ever team but 1. Pride and honor, abound in those programs who don't reach the pinnacle of success, as it does in those who are champions.

I believe so. No matter who wins it or how it is won (outside of cheating/recruiting) its a huge accomplishment. People move all the time. I think sometimes we get caught up in thinking every move is because of sports. The fact is with the majority of families there are other issues that determine a change in location. I do think, like most parents would, when a move is necessary you are going to check out schools in the area you are going for a variety of reasons like academics, certain programs, band, sports, etc.

Apples and oranges, LMB. Of course people move and of course it makes perfect sense to seek the best situation available at your new home. I'm not inclined to debate the legality or reasons people show up at new places.

Throw those out. Forget the Euton/Jackson situation. I'm speaking very general terms about programs who seldom have a down year because of a steady influx of replacement players from outside their natural progression.

I don't even have a problem with exchange students. Thats a normal, incidental, addition.

So, as long as it's within the rules it's a totally desirable situation regardless of the methods used to achieve it?

I think the question lies in how these kids end up at the school. I am not talking about a specific case either. If kids are going to a program because t is considered the best or one of the best programs around, it sounds like maybe the coaching staff and community are getting a bonus because of their hard work (and maybe just lucky because the talent has usually been there). If a school is recruiting or doing something deviant that should not be honored.

I really don't understand, what you keep searching for.

If Player "A", leaves school "A" and goes to school "B", which ends up winning a championship and does so, within the Rules of the KHSAA, than what is not honorable about that.

When Rondo left Central and went to Oak Hill, was he being dis-honorable or did he better himself, for his future.

I'm going to let this sit for a while and see if anyone else picks up on what I'm getting at.

A soldier serving his country is honorable

A man who sacrifices his own wants and desires to do what is best for his family is honorable.

A doctor who gives of his time to go to a third world country to help those who desparately need it is honorable.

In sports - a kid who plays with his whole heart is honorable. A kid who is willing to sacrifice his body and take a charge or dive for a loose ball is honorable.

A team who wins a championship with transfers (who made the move legally) or without should be a source of pride and honor for their friends, family, and community.

Let's try it this way. If Oak Hill were in Kentucky and the rules allowed them as they are to play in the Sweet Sixteen, would you, as an Oak Hill booster, feel as proud of a state championship as you would had you won it with ....oh, let's say Middlesboro.

I can say, unequivocally if a team I involed with, wins a Championship and some new players were added, I would be proud of their accomplishment and honored, to be a part of it.

I'll give one brief example. My son won back-to-back State Titles, in a youth league sport and the 2nd year, there were two young men who moved in and became part of this team. No thoughts about, did they take someone's place or weren't homegrown, ever crossed my mind and never would.

Im a Scott County alumni and season ticket holder. If this team wins the state championship. I will be just as proud of this team as I have been in the other two state championship teams. You still have kids, wether or not they are homegrown or not, playing their hearts out for the school you support.

That's not even close to the situation I'm talking about. Let's just be blunt. You can take any individual player and come up with a very good reason why he is where he is. But, if we're honest, certain programs (football, basketball, baseball, whatever) at certain schools year after year get "lucky" with people transferring in who just happen to be great athletes. These are not isolated instances, but it's yearly and often based on shortcomings of the feeder system for that particular class. I doubt it's recruiting. I think it's daddies shooting the breeze at AAU games or various tournaments. One says to another "You know, when my boy and that Smith boy reach high school, we should be pretty good. If you were to bring your boy and Jones kid to ABC High, we could contend for State." These guys, in most cases, know what the KHSAA is watching for and how to work the system.

So, once again, I'm not asking is it legal. I'm not interested in discussing open enrollment. I'm saying is it honorable even if it is totally legal. Honor is something you deal with when you're all alone.
