Championship Built on Transfers. Is This Honorable?

Featured Replies

This discussion is applicable to all sports and I considered putting it the General Discussion Forum. However since it's a hot basketball topic at the moment, lets do it here.

My question is: If a number of players decide to transfer in to a school other than where they were developed for the purpose of joining other players and enhancing their chances at winning a championship, is there any honor in this? Should a coach recieve accolades for winning with what amounts to an all-star team? Should the fans take pride in a made-for-the-tournament team consisting somewhat of players that they didn't even know a couple of years ago? If I take your best player, someone else's best player, and another's best player and beat you, what have I accomplished? Wouldn't homegrown talent developed and polished be much more a source of pride?

Some will say kudos to the recipient school for building a winning program that attracts good players from other areas. I will counter with perhaps it is the reverse. It is the transfers that keep the program on top.

I'm not really looking to discuss is it legal, ethical, fair, or moral. I'm asking is it honorable. Anyone remember honor?

What say you?

I think you probably are stomping some toes!!!!!

I think personally it is more satisfying to win with homegrown talent. Also more honorable:p

I really didn't mean to. It just seems to me that a manufactured title has a bit less shine to it.

Apparently not.

And by homegrown, do you mean that they all should reside in the same county? See,,,all of our definitions seem to fit our own agendas.:p

Home grown being in my opinion attending the school at least from 7th grade thru 12. Just an opinion

Ideal maybe, but unrealistic in today's job environment. Punishing a kid because his parent has to relocate for his job is ridiculous.

:thumb: I agree

I can say, unequivocally if a team I involed with, wins a Championship and some new players were added, I would be proud of their accomplishment and honored, to be a part of it.

I'll give one brief example. My son won back-to-back State Titles, in a youth league sport and the 2nd year, there were two young men who moved in and became part of this team. No thoughts about, did they take someone's place or weren't homegrown, ever crossed my mind and never would.

My kid's teams have been a part of a couple of "National Championships", 5 State Championships, multiple Regional and District Championships; and a bunch of near misses at the various levels. All the victories were accomplished with NO transfers, move-ins, borrowed players, etc.; and virtually all the "near misses" were to teams with them. I can honestly say I'm very proud of the coaches and parents of these teams for playing with the hands they were dealt; and nothing felt better than beating those "created" teams.

As a side note-- Our kid's HS hoop's team (smaller school), which was an outstanding middle school squad; had the opportunity to accept a "transfer" onto their high school program (same class--current major D-1 recruit) and the Head Coach declined. Did it cost them a potential state championship? Quite possibly? Did they break several school records without him--Yes!! Do I (and the other parents) feel better about their accomplishments because of that coach's decision--Absolutely!!

I certainly understand the "win at all costs mentality" because I've seen it up close and personal. But I'll chose to root for the teams that do it the right way, and let the rest of you relish the "paper trophies". Sleep tight, and may your plastic trophies keep you warm!!!!

And my definition of homegrown would mean from K-4 thru 12th grade. There are few, if any, schools that have not had players from other districts, or in the team you follow, other counties. I'm not casting stones, simply saying that it's everywhere, and to get back to the thread title, there are none honorable if there are no transfers.

Personally, if you work hard as a team, regardless of who you have on the roster or whence they came, then I think it's every bit as honorable as the next. I'm quite sure that Trinity will feel less honorable this season if they win the state football crown if they've had any kids transfer in. Or Scott Co. this season if they're lucky enough to win the sweet 16 in basketball. Perhaps there will be those on this message board who will believe that it's less honorable, but we all know that we don't amount to a hill of beans.

So a student who came to your school and became a student or was to become a student was not allowed to play basketball even though he was definitly good enough? Why would you punish a kid like that?

I agree let the kids play, everybody in the state has used an out of district kid at one time or another, the coaches may not even be aware of how many parents that send their kids to out of district schools.

Why would you punish a kid like that?

Don't you get it LMB? It's not about what's right, best or even good for kids.

It's all about a coach's reputation, the "pride" of a community and doing what's "honorable."

Some call this xenophobia.

More like Toyotaphobia!

No--He never enrolled as the coach didn't return the interest that had been shown, as he disagreed with those type moves. Things worked out fine for the kid, and both schools; but I still agree with those who think these of "created teams" cheapen a title. Just my opinion, and those who strive to create these type teams could certainly care less what I think!!

Well it is my understanding that in all the situatons where transfers come in unless there is illegal recruiting, the coach has no control over transfers. You just take what you have in the school and they do their best with it. I don't see how tha cheapens any sort of championship.
