July 23, 200818 yr Here is an article, regarding Caleb Campbell who was drafted by the Lions. Lions Draft Pick told No Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team. A Department of Defense policy, changed the procedure. Thoughts and comments....
July 24, 200818 yr I just saw this. I feel bad for the guy, they told him yes once but now no. It had to CRUSH him when he got this news. IMO that stinks!!
July 24, 200818 yr What is the last sentence suppose to mean? Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft "in good faith." Gotta feel bad for the kid considering he was told he could play professional football, and then told 'no' right before heading to camp.

It sounds like basically the Army let him enter the draft betting that he wouldn't get picked up. He did, and now they go and change their policy. Very weak move on their part.
July 24, 200818 yr Very sad I feel bad for him but he choose to defend our country first so he has to understand anything the Army says pretty much goes. But I do feel real bad for him.
July 24, 200818 yr Caleb signed on at West Point and I am sure when he did this, his full intentions were to defend our country. I am sure there is disappointment, but I am also sure he understands and is ready to defend our country in any way he can. The Army seemed to get some good press out of the situation, so it surprises me that they would change their policy with Lt. Campbell having come so far in camp. It is too bad that they made a decision so late. Good luck to Lt. Campbell in ALL of his future endeavors. We may see him in an NFL uniform in a few years, regardless of this decision.
July 24, 200818 yr I think it is rather unfortunate...especially after they told him it would be okay. Not cool.

It is too bad that they made a decision so late. They did get some good press, but it's not them changing the policy, it's the Department of Defense, so this policy would cover Army, Navy, and Air Force. I have no issue with the new policy. However, it should only effect those from here forward, not those in the past. This policy should not be reto-active back to the beginning of the year, which is essentially what they're doing with Campbell since this policy wasn't in effect on draft day. The Lions are also getting screwed out of a draft pic, which is something they cannot afford to lose (even though they have a history of horrible drafts).

Although the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy already had policies in place that require student athletes to fulfill military obligations regardless of professional status prior to the passing of this rule. In effect, the rule only affects West Point because only West Point (of the Big 3 academies, not sure of the rules at VMI or the Coast Guard Academy, etc.) would have allowed a student athlete to serve out their military commitment as a recruiter.
July 24, 200818 yr Tough break, I feel so bad for Campbell for this was such a good story during draft weekend. If a scenario emerges as to where Campbell is forced to pull duties over seas and end up a casualty, then you will see a situation that is Pat Tilman x100. Let's just pray this doesn't happen.
July 24, 200818 yr I don't have a problem with the decision, but the timing is pretty poor. I'm sure Campbell is upset, but he knew his obligation to the military when he entered West Point was to serve after graduation.
July 24, 200818 yr It's Your Duty Caleb How anyone could have a problem with the Army forcing Detroit Lion Caleb Campbell into service, effectively removing him from the NFL, I don't know. The government paid for his West Point education. The government spend tens of thousands preparing him to serve. No one forced Campbell to join. No one made him apply to West Point. He'll have to do what many thousands of other West Point grads did: fulfill their military obligation. And the problem with that is?

I agree that it would be unfortunate, and I hope it doesn't happen either. But, to say that it will be Pat Tilman x100 is wrong in my opinion. The stories are similar, but very different as well. I think that Pat Tilman is x100 more of a sad situation and this would be (if it even happens).
