The problem is not the cartoon but, rather, that many (including more than a few BGPers) believe that the satire is true. The NYer needs to dumb it down so that we don't have the morons saying "See! I told you he was a Muslim." The only thing they could have added would have been a video with "whitey" coming out of Mrs. Obama's mouth.

The cartoon is tasteless and well beneath the New Yorker. I'm sure they meant to poke a little fun at the people who believe this trash. The reaction of far too many in this thread show exactly why it was in such poor taste.

This may in fact work and many of the people believing this stuff will finally "get it" due to the publicity surrounding the cover. It is tasteless but that is often the case with satire.

I saw this yesterday evening while flipping the channels. Just happened to see MSNBC's earlier evening politics shows and they were OBSESSED with how offensive and misleading the cover was.

 

I HATE MSNBC! That network should literally advertise "The station for America's leftwing nutjobs!"

The cover is offensive, tasteless and inappropriate. I don't know how any American can find this amusing. If nothing else, the American flag burning in the fireplace should tell you how ridiculous this is.

Ah yes, white guilt and the fear of being labeled a racist. Isn't political correctness just so grand?

Look at this way it could be construded as playing to the fears of some people. Michelle Obama is made to look like Angela Davis. Dressing Senator Obama in a turbin and then having Osama Bin Ladin's picture hanging over the mantle plays toward the fears that Obama is a muslim. Then the insult of all insults. The American flag burning in the fire place.

 

I am not an Obama fan by any stretch, but this wrong. I saw Huckabee on Hannity & Colmes last night. He was disturbed by this 'satire' as well. His comment that 'too many people never research and look past the images or dig into the article.'

The New Yorker is probably one of the most liberal magazines in the country. I think Obama needs to learn to take these things in stride. The POTUS, as long as I can remember has always been fair game for lampooning in political cartoons, as as the First Lady, Veep, etc. I hope we won't have to hear outrage everytime someone is offended the Obama's portrayal in political satire. I don't recall any other Presdents complaining.

I think it was tasteless. I think a comparative example would be to show a republican candidate as a slave master or in a KKK outfit if the candidate was having to fight charges of hidden racial prejudice.

This satire on the issue will do more to propagate the ignorance than poke fun at the ignorant.
