What in God's name could he POSSIBLY have been thinking?

 

An Oklahoma church canceled a controversial gun giveaway for teenagers at a weekend youth conference.

 

Windsor Hills Baptist had planned to give away a semiautomatic assault rifle until one of the event's organizers was unable to attend.

 

The church’s youth pastor, Bob Ross, said it’s a way of trying to encourage young people to attend the event. The church expected hundreds of teenagers from as far away as Canada.

 

I don't have a problem with guns, before some of you (RTS), jump on me. But seriously! To give away a gun at a youth conference? What the hay?

I'm 22, I wonder if they would have given me a semi-automatic rifle? If they can afford it, I'd love to have one.

 

Should they be giving them away to teen agers? I don't think so. Sounds like a really stupid idea IMO.

When I was in high school, I think this would have been fine but, in the present climate of school shootings, I think it was a bad idea.

1970....a boy pulls in the school parking lot with a rifle in a rack in the window. The Asst Principal sees the boy pull in and immediately goes over to the boy's truck and asks to look at the gun. He tells the boy he has one just like it and inquires about how the boy's rifle shoots. He tells him that they should go shooting together after school.

2008....a boy pulls in the school parking lot with a rifle in a gun rack in the window of the boy's truck. The asst principal sees the boy pull in and immediately calls 911. He goes to the boys truck and detains him until police arrive when the boy is placed under arrest. He is expelled from school and his case is still pending in court where he faces a possible 10 year prison sentence.

 

What a difference 30 years makes!!!

I'm trying to figure out what the heck a "semiautomatic assault weapon" is. I know of no such weapon, the semi-auto part alone takes it out of the assault weapon category.
